Help Save the Wickfield "Round Barn"

Wickfield Farm Sales Pavilion - Cantril, IA

National Historic Register - 1986

In a lease agreement with the present owners of the former Wickfield Farm, the Van Buren County Historic Preservation Commission will restore the sales pavilion on its original site. Built in 1918 at an original cost of $20,000 the restoration of the roof alone was expected to run $30,000 with the overall restoration expected to exceed $200,000 in costs.

While it is informally called the "round barn" at Cantril, the Wickfield Sales Pavilion was not built as a barn but as an auction and lodging facility. The Wickfield Pavilion has had a definite impact on the agricultural community. And this is what the Commission is trying to preserve . . a most unique structure and its history.

Wickfield Pavilion - Photo by Maxheim Photography of Des MoinesThe goal of the Van Buren County Historic Preservation Commission is to restore this unique structure on its original site and use it in such a way it will retain its historical value to agriculture and, as Criss Wilson of the Burlington Hawk Eye stated, revive a "toned-down" version of the Wickfield glory days."

Because of the deteriorated condition of the pavilion, the Commission by late 1997 had covered the windows and the damaged roof portions to seal out the winter weather to allow time for project development and fund raising. Click here to view photo with new roof and windows.

This is where help is needed!

We know that many who are visiting this internet page site are doing so because of a love of "old barns", or a love of historical places and would not like to see them become just memories. We hope that you will share in our commitment to saving this historic, agricultural landmark. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful contribution to this cause.
