A Birdwatcher's Paradise

Birds - and birdwatchers - flock to Van Buren County Iowa. The county's wooded hills and roadsides, its river, and its plentiful meadowlands provide prime habitat for many species. Shimek State Forest at Farmington and Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, both have marked trails through prime birding territory. Wild turkeys are frequently seen in both those areas, as well as along country roads.

Van Buren County is Bluebird country. Visitors will find 1000's of nesting boxes throughout the county. Those who have never seen the Bluebird have missed one of nature's most beautiful species.

In Lacey, at the stone bridge near Ely Ford, an abandoned road goes to the left. Many species of migrating warblers can be seen along this trail, and several species nest in the area. Trails leading from Ely Ford pass through flycatcher territory, and a major vulture roost is located across the river from the ford.

Eagles can be seen up and down the Des Moines River during the winter.

Wildflowers are also abundant within the county. The two state parks, along with the county parks, provide excellent sites for observing and photographing the flowers. Many privately-owned timber areas are excellent for both bird-watching and for wildflower photography, but be sure you ask permission.
