The Mason House Inn of Bentonsport was built in 1846 to serve steamboat travelers going from St. Louis to Des Moines. It was constructed by Mormon craftsmen who stayed in Bentonsport one year, then continued their famous trek to Utah. It was first called the Ashland House. The name changed in 1857 when the Lewis J. Mason family moved to the Inn from New York. They brought many antique furnishings which remain in the house today.Oral tradition has that Abe Lincoln and Mark Twain slept in the Mason House Inn. Travelers received quality hosting in the 19th century, and that tradition continues into the 1990's. In June of 1989, new owners purchased the Inn, and did extensive refurbishing. This included remodeling the old Bonaparte railroad station and connecting it to the Inn. The Inn now has nine guest rooms, five with private baths. Guests will find a cookie jar in each quiet room. The Inn has been assigned a two-diamond rating by AAA. Owners Chuck and Joy Hanson look forward to your visit!
