The bridge shown is the original bridge across the Des Moines River connecting Bentonsport to Vernon. Begun in 1882, it was completed in 1885 and dedicated by an all-day merrymaking that was climaxed by a dance at the Mason House in the evening. It is one of only a few one-lane bridges left standing in the State of Iowa. It has been closed to traffic since 1985 and was closed as a pedestrian bridge in 1990. However, due to the efforts of concerned citizens and members of the Bentonsport Improvement Association, money was raised to restore the bridge and it was reopened to foot traffic during the late summer of 1994. Those wishing to help with the continuing maintenance of the bridge may purchase "Planks" or make donations at the "Iron and Lace" shop.
