17. Alexander JOHNSON (James JOHNSON , James ) was born 15 Nov 1826 in Wabash Twp, Fountain Co. IN. He died 21 Apr 1880 in Fountain Co., IN and was buried in Mt. Carmel (White) Cem., Fountain Co., IN.

Alexander married Melvina SPINKS on 28 Mar 1850. Melvina was born in KY. She was buried in Mt. Carmel (White) Cem., Fountain Co., IN.

19. William James JOHNSON Jr. (William James JOHNSON , James ) was born 1 Dec 1821 in Warren Co., OH. He died 25 Apr 1909 in Van Buren Co., IA and was buried in Bonaparte Cem., Bonaparte, Van Buren Co., IA.

Born near Springboro, Warren Co. OH. Moved to Fountain Co. IN with parents at age of 6. In the year 1836 the family moved to Monmouth,IL and to Van Buren Co. IA the following year. Assisted in the construction of the first damn accross the river at Bonaparte according to 1890 Portrait Biographical Album. Worked at the mill for 17 yrs. Joined with Christy to form Christy and Johnson in 1856 and continued that business for quarter of a century. Was Clerk of Court for Van Buren Co. In 1900 he was living in the household of his daughter and son-in-law William Bogle, Bonaparte township, Van Buren Co. IA.

William married Mary Jane CHRISTY, daughter of James CHRISTY and Mary, on 5 Mar 1846. Mary was born 8 Dec 1821 in New Rumley, Harrison Co., OH. She died 1 Dec 1896.

A ninth child died in infancy.

William and Mary had the following children:

24. Joseph Alexander JOHNSON (William James JOHNSON , James ) was born 18 Nov 1832 in Fountain Co., IN. He died 14 Nov 1886 in Farmington, Van Buren Co., IA and was buried in Bonaparte Cem., Bonaparte, Van Buren Co., IA.

Came to Iowa with parents in 1837. Spent some years in California per obit. Meredith scrapbook states obit. birthdate as Dec. 18, 1832. Death notice in Birmingham, IA Enterprise newspaper, Nov. 25, 1886 .. "Joseph Johnson, living four miles northwest of Farmington died Sunday, Nov. 13th, of a causcerous affection of the side, aged 54 years."

Obit. and tombstone state born 12/18/1832.

Presbytrian Church held services.

Joseph married Sarah Catherine VAN CLEAVE, daughter of John VAN CLEAVE and Sarah J DUNN, on 18 May 1871. Sarah was born 15 Apr 1846 in Orange Co., IN. She died 5 Jan 1933 in Bonaparte, Van Buren Co., IA.

They had the following children:

Never married. For a time was a cleck at J. W. Whitely & Sons store. Died of Raynaud's Disease.

  54 F v Alice Estella JOHNSON was born 5 Aug 1878 in farm near Bonaparte. She died 1 May 1955 and was buried in Bonaparte Cem., Bonaparte, Van Buren Co., IA.

Alice Estella Johnson entered the College of Arts, Literature, and Science of The University of Chicago in the Summer Quarter of 1912 having attended Iowa State Teachers College from 1907 to 1911. In August of 1913 she was awarded an Associate in Philosophy and in June of 1915 was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy.  She was admitted to Graduate Study in April of 1917 but registered for only the Spring Quarter of 1917 and did
not complete a graduate degree.

Born 8/5/1878 per hand written obit.
Graduated Univ. of Chicago with honors.

25. Sarah Caroline JOHNSON (William James JOHNSON , James ) was born 7 Jun 1835 in Covington, Fountain Co., IN. She died 19 May 1933.

Lost 4 other children per Biog. History of VB Co.

She came to Iowa with her parents in 1837. Her family owned the first kerosene lamp in Bonaparte, her father bringing a quart of kerosene from Pennsylvania to first use in same. Her home was also the home in which the first piano which came to Bonaparte was placed.- Bonaparte Record (The Thomas and Sarah Christy Johnson grand piano can be found on display in the lobby of the Hotel Manning in Keosauqua, IA.)

Sarah married Thomas CHRISTY, son of James CHRISTY and Mary, on 24 Jul 1853. Thomas was born 16 Nov 1829 in New Remley, Harrison Co., OH. He died 11 Jul 1887.

He came to Van Buren Co., in 1842 and in 1848 to Bonaparte. In 1850 he went to California and in 1853 returned to Bonaparte. Elected Sheriff of Van Buren Co. the same year. Was later in the mercantile business first as Gregory & Christy; Christy & Johnson (1857) and then Christy & McDonald. He was also for five years cashier of the Farmer's and Traders Bank of Bonaparte. Elected to Iowa Legislature in 1875. Was a member of Van Buren Co. Board of Supervisors in 1872.

Thomas married (1) Rebecca Jane PERKINS, daughter of Joseph F PERKINS and Eliza MYERS, on 18 Feb 1873. Rebecca was born 11 Nov 1851. She died 25 Feb 1879 and was buried in Bonaparte Cem., Van Buren Co. IA.

Died Tue. 25th.

Thomas also married (2) Josephine WHITMORE on 16 Mar 1882. Josephine was born 8 Sep 1845 in Jefferson Co., IA. She died 23 Sep 1894.

Worked in the woolen mill for many years. Obit. states 2 children died in infancy and she was survived by a daughter and step daughter.

29. Margaret JOHNSON (John , James ) was born about 1807.

Margaret married David DEARDORFF on 1827 in Warren Co., OH.

David Deardorff is listed in 1840 Warren Co., OH Federal Census, Franklin Twp., p. 93 and 1860 Franklin Twp. p. 192..

David and Margaret had the following children:

Mary married (1) Israel GREGG, son of Samuel GREGG and Nancy Ann O'BRIAN, on 27 Mar 1834 in Warren Co., OH. Israel was born 19 Jan 1813. He died 24 Aug 1838 in Warren Co., OH and was buried in Springboro Cem., Clearcreek Twp., Warren Co., OH.

According to "Quaker Greggs", p. 226, and other documents, Israel was born November 19, 1812. His father, Samuel Gregg, owned land adjoining that of James Johnson in Clearcreek township, Warren Co., OH.

Israel and Mary had the following children:
