Highlights of Library Policies
The Complete Manual of Policies of the Union Public Library is available for your viewing
at the Union Public Library.
Library Cards
To obtain a library card, a person must have a form of verification for name and address,
such as Driver's license, or insurance card. A minor child must bring a parent or
guardian into the library to show verification of name and address. Library cards
are issued for three years.
Circulation services
Books and most other items are checked out for two weeks and may be renewed if no one else
has placed a hold on the item. Video cassettes are checked out for three days with
no renewal. The latest issue of a magazine is checked out overnight.
There is a limit of two video cassettes per
person or six per family. Borrowed materials may be renewed by telephone, e-mail or
at the circulation desk.
If the item you want is checked out, you may place a hold on it. When it is
returned, it will be held for you and you will be notified. If the Union Public
Library does not own the item you need, we will borrow it from another library. You
may place the interlibrary loan request in person or by e-mail or phone.
The function of the library is to provide information. Library materials are
selected on the basis of interest and demand in the community. A great effort is
made to provide a balanced collection. All library materials shall be available to
all library patrons. Limitations on juvenile reading or viewing is considered a
parental responsibility and not a function of the
library.
Overdue Notices and Fines
When an item is two weeks overdue, an overdue notice, but not a fine, will be sent.
A $1.00 fine will be charged when an item is four weeks overdue, and an additional $1.00
fine when the item is six weeks overdue. $1.00 fine will be charged every three days
for overdue video cassettes.
Patron Use of Computers and Access to the Internet
The Union Library offers its patrons use of computers in the library and also offers
access to the Internet. Patrons must be in high school of older and be able to use a
computer before they are issued a Computer User's Card. Patrons applying for either
a Internet User's card or a Computer User's card
may be requested to attend a brief training session or demonstrate their competence.
All Internet users will sign an Internet Use Agreement form. Users under 18 years of
age must have their card signed by a parent or guardian. Parents or guardians, not
the Library of its staff, are responsible for the information selected or accessed by
their children.
Use of the Library Building
The Library basement meeting room may be used by any organization, group or person in the
community. Reservations may be made only by an adult.
