Technology is an extremely important part of any classroom. All students need to have a strong understanding of how computers work. I feel that children are never to young to begin learning about the benefits of working with different types of technology.
As part of my kindergarten student teaching, I helped to implement a weekly computer time into the curriculum. My cooperating teacher was not very comfortable with computers and had been hesitant to take a class into the computer lab. I offered to lead the class in a weekly computer time. As a class, we worked on turning on and off the computer, mouse control, and printing. We mainly worked with a program called KidPix that lets children create pictures, puppet shows, and short movies. By using different tools, they were able to incorporate and explore many different functions of a computer. The class all really enjoyed our computer time. And, in the seven weeks that I was there, the children all became more confident with all of the important skills needed to work a computer.
