Rainmakers on Narrowboat Jade
(Personal Account of Our 1997 Travels in England)
Chapter 1: Introduction
The Rainmakers Plan to Hire Narrowboat Jade
For months we had been reading in the canal magazines about the prolongued drought in England and the low levels of the waterways. Would we be able to get through Tring Summit? Since we had arranged to hire Narrowboat Jade in Linslade and travel the Thames Ring, we would have a short trip if we only got to Tring!
However, with our reputation as Rainmakers Extraordinaire, we felt we surely would bring rain to England again, as we have to so many places before (wherever we travel, they have the rainiest season in many years, and usually also the coldest!)
So we planned our travels, tuning in to George's Canal Page faithfully (as everyone knows, you have to be faithful or you get so many messages backlogged that it takes all morning to download your email).
This would be our fourth canal trip together:
Paul (the Captain)
Mary Anne (First Mate)
Warren (Chief Windlass Operator)
and Elaine (Rope Holder)
You can see Warren and Elaine's picture at the top of this page; to see Paul at the tiller on one of our previous trips, Click here for picture of Paul and Elaine on NB MeafordLittle did we know this would be our most event-ful trip ever, including two hospitalizations in England and one on our return to the U.S. But more about that coming up in Chapter 2!
