Why are you called "Travel Genie Maps"?

The "Genie" in "Travel Genie" stands for Genealogy. We are called Travel Genie Maps because we sell detailed maps for Travel and Genealogy.

How did Travel Genie start?

In 1985 we (Warren and Elaine Larson) started a map store
in Ames, Iowa partly because we had worked on our own family histories and found wonderful detailed maps overseas of the areas in which we were interested (primarily Germany and Norway for our ancestry). We wanted to make these maps readily available in the U.S.

We sold the general bookstore/travel store in 1995, but retained the name Travel Genie Maps and the portion of the business that now sells the detailed sectional maps of Britain, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden.

For what countries can you provide detailed maps?

We specialize in Britain, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden. In the past we also carried maps of Denmark, Germany and Poland. These have been discontinued, though we still have some stock left which we are selling via Apple's Attic .

How do you help people find places?

Many people who do family history research work hard to discover a foreign place name, then conclude that the place is no longer there because they can't find it on a map.

To complicate matters, researchers may have a name taken from an old handwritten record, with problems ranging from spelling variations to border changes.

The place is usually still there, if one has a map detailed enough to show it. We use various indexes and gazetteers to help locate places on modern, detailed maps.

Do you sell historic maps?

Only a few, of Germanic areas, via Apple's Attic. The historic reproductions we carry are generally much less detailed than good current-day maps. Sometimes it is helpful to consult historic maps, especially for areas where border changes and name changes are a factor, but we are more often able to find small places on our detailed current-day maps than we are on the less-detailed historic reproductions.

Are your maps in color?

Yes, with the exception of the historic reproductions. Most show topography and roads as well as places.

How big are the actual maps?

They vary in size (see descriptions in the online brochures). Most are 30" x 20" or larger. Some are as large as 48" x 38". They are folded and can be mailed to you in regular envelopes.

Again, the exceptions are the historic reproductions, which are about 14" x 18".

Are the maps indexed?

Most are not. We have some reference materials we use to help us find places, but usually only the atlases are indexed.

Is a Large-Scale Map better than a Small-Scale Map?

It is normally more detailed, which means it covers less territory.

Map scale is described by a ratio. If a map has a scale of 1:100,000, this means that 1 centimeter on the map represents 100,000 centimeters in real life. A map with a scale of 1:100,000 should have more detail (it is larger scale) than a map with a scale of 1:300,000.

On a 1:100 000 scale map, 1 inch = about 1.58 miles; on a 1:300 000 scale map, 1 inch = about 4.73 miles.

Note: A SMALLER number on the right side of the ratio means that the map is LARGER scale. Don't let this confuse you!

If you use a camera with a zoom lens, you may think of the 1:100,000 scale map as a map set on "telephoto," and the 1:300,000 scale map as one set on "wide angle." On "telephoto" you see many things you can't see when you look through a lens set on "wide angle," but you can't see as much territory at one time.

For instance, you can fit all of Germany on one map with a scale of 1:800,000. It takes 18 maps about the same size to cover all of Germany at at scale of 1:150,000. Looking at that would be like looking at a map of one State as compared to looking at a map that covers all of the U.S. You see a lot of towns on a State map that are not shown on the U.S. map, but you can't see the whole U.S. at once.

What if I want to order a map but don't know what section I need?

Even if you can't pinpoint the correct location, maybe we can. Feel free to contact us with whatever information you have. We are glad to help you order the correct map, and do not charge extra for verifying that the place you want is on the map you order.

What do these maps cost?

They vary in price. Most of our maps are in the US$12.95 to US$19.95 range per map, but please consult our current online brochures for specific pricing information.

Shipping and Handling is US$5.00 per order for orders sent to the USA (see order form for details). Please ask for a quote on orders sent to other countries.

Sales tax applies if you live in IA, IL, KS, MN, MO, NE, or WI.

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, we accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. We also accept checks made out to Travel Genie, or money orders (in US$ only).

Do you keep these maps on hand?

We try. However, it takes six to eight weeks for overseas surface mail to reach us, and that is the only practical way for us to order from most of our suppliers, so if we are temporarily out of something, it may be out of stock for a long time. If you need something immediately, it would be best to have us check our stock before you place your order.

How can I obtain a brochure?

First, please check our online information. Click on one of the buttons to the left to see more information about maps we carry for that country.

If you have trouble accessing our online brochures, we will send a printed one to addresses in North America if you send us a request by mail or email telling us your name, mailing address, and which brochure(s) you want.

Due to postal costs, we do not mail free brochures outside of North America, but we would be glad to answer specific questions by email.

Do you really travel often and if so, how do I get a job like that?

Yes and no. We are in and out a lot, even when we are not travelling, so we always ask you to be prepared to leave a message for us.

Travel Genie is so specialized that we can't expect others to do what we (Warren and Elaine) do, yet we can't be here all the time. Therefore, we warn you ahead of time that sometimes your email may not be answered for up to a week. Usually, even when we are travelling, we can answer email at least once a week.

How do you get a job like this? We call it "semi-retirement." There are only two requirements: 1. Develop a knowledge base so specialized that no one else does what you do; and 2. Serve your customers very well when you are "on the job" so they recommend you to others.

In a hurry?

We travel often. We can usually check email at least once a week, but we may not be able to answer questions or fill orders while we are out of town.

Please let us know before ordering if you need your order by a certain date. We can verify that we are in town and have the item(s) that you want in stock.

NOTE: If you do not receive a reply to your email in about 10 days, please DO repeat your email. It can happen that an email gets lost or deleted in error by spam filters. Please be sure your email has a meaningful subject, not just "Hi" or "please help."
