Gourd Kalimba

This instrument is known by a number of names: sansa, mbira, thumb piano and finger harp are just a few. We make a very traditional gourd kalimba. A set of spring steel tongues of different lengths are connected to a cherry wood sound board and mounted on a cut gourd. It is played by plucking down the end of the various 'boingers' to produce a pleasant melody. It is very easy to learn.

We have precisely tuned each kalimba to two scales, the pentatonic and diatonic, and visibly marked them so that even the novice can keep it in tune. Many of our kalimbas have been used by professionals because of the quality of the tuning and tone.
