S Bar J Rodeo Company came to be because John started his "rodeo" career riding saddle broncs and bulls with no experience. If you are going to ride you are going to get hurt but learning correct form and practice minimizes the dangers. John always thought that lessons would have helped and teaching the techniques is one way he can stay involved with rodeo and it is Diane's way of being involved with what he and now son Steven love to do.
John rode "rodeo" for 10 years but his experience does not stop there. He has continued to put on many rodeo productions with different rodeo contractors which included being a pick up man, clowning, judging (live rodeos as well as mechanical bull contests), setting up/tearing down, hauling livestock, and chute boss.
Our bull riding school starts from the ground up. We use barrels to teach the basics like how to get down on a bull in the chutes, tying your rope, ways to correctly fall off, all the fundamentals before actually getting on a bull. Then we start with our "school bulls" and go from there. Underage riders are required to wear helmets or face masks which we provide, we also have vests, ropes, and sell mouthpieces. We order most of our equipment through Saddle Barn and can order for any of our customers also.
Our practice pen is for the more experienced riders it gives them a place to practice their skills and also to get pointers if needed.
David Preston also runs a bull fighting school here at S Bar J Rodeo Company. He will work with those interested in trying bull fighting and those that want to learn more about their profession.
