The Search for Spirituality

               The Holiness and Judgment of God!

Have you ever heard any of the following statements?
“Who are you to be judging me?”
“Who are you to be telling me what is right and wrong?”
“You should be more tolerant and accepting.”
It has been said by many people, believers and unbelievers, that the most often quoted verse in the Bible is, “judge not, that you be not judged.”

We are living in a time of the world and our American culture, when our search for spirituality has resulted in a rejection of what is right and wrong, a rejection of absolutes. We no longer want to hear that there is a right and wrong; we no longer want to hear that we are sinners and will be held accountable by a higher and divine authority; we no longer want to hear that there is a heaven and a hell. We have fooled ourselves into thinking God is a doting old grandfather, who winks at sin, disobedience and rebellion against Him. We have fooled ourselves into thinking that God doesn't bring judgment anymore.

The devastating hurricanes, the frequency of the earthquakes in many places throughout the earth (even here in the United States) are not just the forces of nature and mother earth. The AIDS problem, which I believe is the judgment of God on the sexual immorality of our world and not the result of the scientific medical research's inability to find a cure for a illness.

Some would respond today by replying, that if God is a God of love and compassion how can one even suggest that God is judging people and nations. God's holiness is an absolute; He would be denying one of His divine characteristics if He failed to bring judgment on the sins, wickedness, rebellion and intentional disobedience of mankind.

There are some people, who think that God is not a God of judgment, because His judgment is not immediate. But that just verifies that He is patient and long-suffering. He suffers with the sins and disobedience of people and nations a long time, trying to get their attention in other ways, rather than lowering the boom, bringing out his anger against our sins and rebellion. God is not willing that any should perish, but that people would turn from their sins and seek the truth in His Son, Jesus Christ.

A way to define holy is with the use of terms like separate, set apart, different, special. There is the thinking by some people in our world today that we can all find or discover spirituality by each of us exploring any experience or behavior that is unique, different and special from someone else. But the Word of the Lord is that spirituality is found only in His plan. There is certainly uniqueness in God's plan depending on a person's temperament, conversion experience, spiritual gifts and life's opportunities. But any deviation from the Lord's plan will result in His judgment.

The expression of sexuality outside of God's plan will result in the consequences of sexually transmitted diseases, adultery, broken homes, shattered families and angry young people.
The expression of anger outside of God's plan results in the consequences of unforgiveness, vengeance, abuse, rape, murder, etc.
The use of government outside of God's plan results in the consequences of worshipping man, money and military power.
The role of parents usurped by ungodly influences will result in God's judgment; adolescent anger and rebellion.
The use of money and material treasures outside of God's plan will result in the consequences of debt, bribery, extortion, etc.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. {8}
For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Galatians 6:7-8 New Kings James Version)

“Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.”

“But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:” {16}
“Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country{”20}
“The LORD will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me.” {22}
“The LORD will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with severe burning fever, with the sword, with scorching, and with mildew; they shall pursue you until you perish.” (Deuteronomy 28:1, 15-16, 20,22. NKJV)

For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. (Deuteronomy 5:9-10 NKJV)

Oh, let us worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness! Psa 96:9 NKJV
