Wavaddiction (#WA) is the largest Wav and sound channel on any IRC network. Wavaddiction is dedicated to user chat while trading wav files. WA has one of the highest channel data throughputs of any IRC channel on Undernet. In an average day, WA will see between 400 and a 1000 people come through its doors. WA averages 55 people in channel during United States prime time, and 20-40 in off hours. WA has users from all over the world.
Wavaddiction is also the Official WavOut Help Channel. Wavout is an excellent mIRC addon program that automates the requesting and sending of wav files. Thank you for taking time to read the FAQ file and THANK YOU for supporting Wavaddiction.
To make finding updates and corrections easier, the following legend will be used in future updates. Simply use your text viewer or editor to search for the following to find anything new in the FAQ:
[!] denotes a minor update.
[:] denotes a new item.
If you can not find an answer to your question here in the FAQ file, please feel free to ask an op or any of the helpers (those with a @ or + is front of their nick). If ops are busy (and we often are), feel free to ask once in channel too - many of #WA's users are quick to help out.
Please don't forget to thank who ever helped you in channel, we do
this for free and a thank you makes all the difference in the world.
A wav is a windows format sound file. The beeps, bells, and
whistles that windows makes are from wav files. Wav filenames
have the extension .wav
To request a wave file from someone, type the persons nickname
with an exclamation point in front of it. Such as to request the
wavaddiction theme wav from BamBam, you would type in the channel
window:
<yournick> !BamBam wavaddic.wav
and his system would begin to send you the wav file. Please note,
that requesting waves IN CHANNEL is the only format supported by
#Wavaddiction.
TOC
There could be several reasons:
The person you requested the file from could be at their maximum send capacity.
Lag. There are times when lag is as high as 1-2minutes - it may take that long for your request to reach the other person.
The other person could have program or script problems.
A mistake in the request format:
you may have typed the nick wrong
you may have left a space at the beginning of their nick.
Before thinking there is a problem with your system or the other
persons system, try requesting another file from a few other people
and see if they begin sending the file.
Minimum of one every 30 seconds, and we prefer a minute. There
is a wide range of flexibility here. If the channel is super busy
and many users are playing, then slow down a bit. If the channel is
slow, then speed up a bit. Use your judgment.
If your system is maxed out on the number of files it can send,
then maybe turn off the player for awhile until your sends clear out
a bit.
We would suggest a maximum of one every 45 seconds and prefer
longer. The main limitation will be your own systems ability to
download the files at a reasonable speed. When your max get speed
drops way down there, it is time to stop requesting files.
If using mIRC version 4.7 or higher, you can go to
file/options/sound tab, and check "listen for !nick filename" and
mirc will transparently handle the transfer without user
intervention.
Another way, is to add the following to your remotes and enable
listening:
on mirc 4.7
on 1:text:!nick*:/dcc send $nick $2
with mirc 5.0 or higher:
1 on:text:!nick*:/dcc send $nick $2
Replace !nick with your current nickname.
However the above are stop gap measures at best. Its short
comings will become apparent after usage. Best bet with mirc is
to get a Wav program addon (Wavout) and rock & roll.
That is a good question, with no pat answer. Generally speaking
it is mainly up to your computers configuration. When your
average characters per second drops below 200cps, then you are
fairly maxed out. Individual sends may be low, but when the
combination of all your ongoing dcc sends drops below 200cps, then
it is time to set that as your limit. You may even notice your
irc program slowing down when you reach your limit.
Here is a short table of general recommendations:
| Modem speed | Suggested Max Sends |
| 2400 | 1 |
| 9600 | 2-4 |
| 14400 | 4-6 |
| 28800 | 7-10 |
| 33600 | 9-12 |
| 56K or X2 | 9-12 |
| ISDN | 10-20 |
| Intranet | 10-?? |
| Cable Modem | 30-?? |
| T1-T3 | 40-??? |
Remember though, that you should not request a file more that once
every 30 seconds.
Just because you have a 33.6 modem, doesn't mean you a connected
at 33.6 (more-than-likely it is slower).
If you have an X2 modem, remember that your maximum send speed is
still limited to 33600 bps.
Midi is just another type of sound file. Midi files are more
platform independent than Wav files. Midi's will work on almost
all popular 16bit or higher computers systems. (such as Amigas,
Macs, Ataris, Commodores, IBM clones, some Apples). Certainly
many of those platforms can play Wav files, but the Midi format is
about 10 years older than Wav files. The playing and receiving of
Midi files is supported by #Wavaddiction.
Your sound card must be specifically setup to play a Midi
file. (see your sound card documentation if you are having
problems) There are so many various sound cards and setups, that
it is very difficult to trouble shoot Midi problems. Consult your
manual and/or your computer manufactures support line.
An MP3 sound file is the audio portion of the MPeg movie file
format. MP3's are generally higher sample rate (more sound data
per second) than Wav or Midi files; thus, they sound cleaner and
better - near CD quality. MP3's are also highly compressed. A
1meg MP3 file will convert to a 3-20meg Wav or Midi file.
Most of the newer sound file addons for mIRC (Wavout/Wavget)
support the playing and requesting of MP3 files. Please consult
your Wav program manual for configuration.
As per the request of Undernet, #Wavaddiction NO LONGER supports
the playing an requesting of MP3's.
A specific program is required to Play and MP3 on your system.
There are several available on the Internet. Most users seem to
use WinPlay.
You should note that MP3 players have some moderate to steep
system requirements to work. Generally a 486 faster than 66mhz
and 16meg of ram is required at a minimum. Some 100mhz 486
systems (mine...grrr) won't play an MP3 without pausing every
10-15 seconds. It is best if you have a Pentium system above
90mhz to play an MP3.
Making a wav can be quite simple for some people, and very
complicated for others. Here are some general guidelines that
will cover most users:
Making a wav from a Microphone:
Making a wav from a CD player:
Making a wav from a External CD player Stereo system:
Making a Wav from a Video Cassette recorder:
Audio Source Notes:
A wav program addon, automates the playing and requesting of wav
files. They will also allow you to catalog your wav files and
include a one line description. The majority of users in #WA use
WavOut or WavGet.
You can find a wav addon at one of the following URL's. It is
best to get any program direct from the author (there have been
known virus's distributed via IRC).
Wavout Homepage
Wavget Homepage: Wavget Home Page
Ultrawav (pirch compatible) Ultrawave
7th sphere script: 7th Sphere
Stop in to any of the larger Windows FTP sites
and you will find many MP3 players. WinPlay is available
here
First and foremost, is to spend 15-30minutes reading the install
section of the programs help file. Even if some makes no sense,
it will click with you later. Most of the newer addon programs
like Wavout and Wavget are auto installing and easy to setup.
If, after installing and reading, you still can't get it to work,
feel free to query and op or helper for assistance. Please do NOT
ask for step-by-step help. The install section of all of the Wave
program addons specifically spell out what you can/should do.
Ops should be used as a last resort if you can't get it working
after trouble shooting for yourself. We like to have fun too, and
generally help many, many users a day. Thank you.
Our sister channel is a new dedicated Help channel for WavOut 3.0
called #waveout_help. Stop in there for assistance with WO3 and
then come on back and plays till ya drop!
Probably a standard setup problem. Try the following to fix:
Disconnect from IRC
Under /file/setup/local info tab:
Check the "On connect, Always get Local Host",
Check the "Method Server",
exit with "Ok"
reconnect to IRC.
try again.
Under file/options/perform, enter the following:
/pdcc 2147482999
/dcc packetsize 4096
/fsend on
Those three changes will increase the send speed 1% to 10%. By
putting them in your Perform section, they will automatically be
performed every time you connect to an IRC server.
You can use an addon program called Ultrawav
There is also use an excellent PIL script file called SoundR that
is available at: SoundR
(Please do NOT use the default !DCCSEND notices in SoundR -
please use the !nick filename.wav format - which is also
available in SoundR.)
Simply put, Wav and Midi. Any other format or file type, is
strictly prohibited.
Please remember that we have users all over the world, and there
are subtle variations in the english language. What might be
offensive in the Australia, isn't necessarily so in the United
Sates.
For example: if an Australia or English user says he is going
outside to have a fag, it means he is going to have a cigarette :)
Please be respectful and kind to other users. We like to have fun
in #Wavaddiction, and belligerent or abusive language is not only
uncool - it can/will get you booted out into the hall.
If you want and enjoy sound files that much, get your self a wav
program addon and come on in and play and download files till your
hearts content.
#Wavaddiction does not support private /msg or /notices for wave
requests and *may be* grounds for kick/banning.
If you are requesting privately and not intending to, here are some things you can check to fix this problem:
If using mIRC, goto file/options/sound tab and uncheck the "send !nick as pvt msg" option.
If using WavGet, check the configuration menu (press the folder icon) and uncheck the "use /notice" option.
If you are using a custom script - please change the option to
in channel requests or better yet, disable the script.
If you need assistance with either of the above, please feel free
to /query a #Wavaddiction operator, or ask in channel.
People dislike private messages for requests, because it opens a
new window on the senders system. This takes the windows focus
away from another chat window - interrupting them and forcing them
to close the new request window and causing them to lose their
train of thought (very rude).
You will undoubtedly be informed to change the option if you use
it - both by #Wavaddiction users and ops alike - everyone hates
pvt messages for requests.
A wav program that plays wavs all night? Great! Thank you! You
bet, sharing files is fun, and if you wish to turn on your wav
player and head off for awhile, we thank you for it.
A clone is a second instance of an IRC client running on one
users system and also connected to IRC. Most IRC servers will
K-line (kill) anyone running a clone on the same server. We do
not allow users to run clones in #WA. The only exception to this
rule, is Operators may bring in a clone in case our W channel bot
program decides to lay down on the job.
Please do not bring clones into #Wavaddiction.
Autogetters are a method of automating the requesting of files via a
program or a script. Autogetters will automatically request a file
without user intervention. At current, the only addon program that
support true Autogetting is Wavget. There are a few autogetting
scripts as well.
Autogetting has a tendency to flood channel with a large stream of
requests - this adds to channel lag. Many people come in to #WA,
turn on there autogetter, and go to sleep - leaving it run for
hours on end. Good wave players do not enjoy feeding some ones
autogetter and often complain. Additionally, autogetters tend to
"multiple" in channel. If 10 users come in and turn on their
autogetter requesting 3 files a minute - you do the math. The
equation is simple, allowing autogetters would = the death of #WA.
We are more than just a file trading channel.
Generally, those that run autogetters will be asked to stop
several times before kicking and banning. Feel free to cancel a
send to anyone running an autogetter.
The term Spam originated with a comedy sketch by Monty Pythons
flying circus. The sketch featured a 30 course meal made entirely
of spam. (spam and eggs, spam and ham, spam and cabbage, spam,
spam, spam!) Spam is also used by United States military enlisted
personnel to describe anything that wont die, mold or grow old
(ie, sea rations).
The term has been used in Usenet news groups to describe unwanted
advertisements or messages off topic. You probably get Email Spam
from internet advertisers :(
Channel spam includes all things that are of an automated misc
Garbage category that are not related to chatting, play waves or
receiving waves.
Within the context of IRC and #Wavaddiction, SPAM includes: Auto
greet messages, File finder replies, Away messages, Ping replies,
advertisements, cyber sex trolls, and "I'm looking for a wav"
messages. Help save the internet, be a SPAM fighter today!
note:There were 30 million cans of spam sold last year in the
United States. Thats alota spam.
Short answer NO. Long answer, is again because Wavaddiction is
so high through put, we like to reserve channel for just chat,
wav requests and plays.
Pick up any info file on IRC and under the word RUDE you will
find Auto Greets and Auto Messages listed. Auto timed messages
are very poor IRC etiquette.
If we allow everyone to have some auto messages - the channel will
again be over run with them and #Wavaddiction will be unusable
within weeks.
Users that regularly feed auto messages to channel will be asked
to stop this behavior. Please do not do it.
(note: #WA ops do have some required channel information available
on message timers that are sent to channel regularly)
If you are looking for an old favorite, sure, ask away - just
please don't do it a million times an hour. No more than once
every 15 minutes. Remember, the same people are in the channel for
the majority of your time there and seeing the same Begging request
can get real old. Users like to help where they can - if someone
has the wav, they will send it to you, you needn't ask 4-5 times
in a few minutes.
Here is a good method: ask once or twice in channel, and then put
this line in your remote events:
1 on:join:#Wavaddiction:/notice $nick I am looking for xxxxx.wav,
if you have it, please /msg me or play it.
Large Ascii art is no allowed in Wavaddiction.
Ascii art makes it hard to read wav plays and interrupts chat and
discussion. With WA being very high through put, it would be
impossible to play any ascii art that wouldn't be "walked on"
anyway. Also, adding a bandwidth killer like ascii art, would
induce minutes worth of lag into the channel.
Please limit to 5 lines or less - and then only use them for quick
greetings and goodbyes.
Setup your wav program, and include the URL in your wav play message. Please do not just spam channel with the url...be sneaky, hide it in a wav play message or your IRC quite message.
Listed in general order of severity:
Sending unrequested files to other users.
Advertising (products or other channels).
Ignoring an operator when they personally asked you to change something.
Excessive obscene, abusive, or belligerent language.
Playing ASCII art or text over 5 lines.
Flooding channel with too many file requests or file plays.
Running a clone.
Running an autogetter.
A plus is used on IRC to indicate that person can speak in a
moderated channel (voiced, or mode +v). Since #WA is not a
moderated channel, we use the + to indicate, that this person is a
helper and someone willing to take questions about Wavs and Wav
programs.
W and X are programs (bots) run by Undernet that manage various
aspects of the channel. W and X keep track of op'ing, banning,
and control of the channel.
The only question left - is W male or female?
Yes Way! Hosted by Asmo Jay (Thanks bunches ASMO!):
When someone "nukes" you, they access an unsupported "port" on your Windows 95 Winsock. This will crash your computer all the way back to a reboot. This bug in Win95 is easily corrected by getting the fix from Microsoft at:
Download, and run the exe file - it is a simple painless install.
Absolutely NOT. The sending of unrequested files is STRICTLY
prohibited. Doing so, is almost a certain kick and ban
(especially if it is a zip or executable file). There are far to
many Virus's and Trojan programs available on the internet to
allow anyone to send unrequested files.
We do not allow sending of unrequested sound files because you can
not tell what the content of the file and some people might find
your content insulting, objectionable or abusive.
Please only use the play and request system of file trading within
#Wavaddiction.
We prefer you didn't - however if you must, please do not spam
channel with an advert for your fserver.
We reserve the right to kick/ban anyone distributing anything but
sound format (Wav/Midi) files from their fserver.
Any fserver found to be containing adult oriented picture files is an
almost certain kick/ban for quite awhile.
In the context of #Wavaddiction, flooding is defined as playing or
requesting an excessive amount of waves in a short period of time.
Please spread out your requests and plays. Flooding may also
include playing long ASCII Art, or the repetition of word and
phrases. Please spread out your requests and plays.
When someone requests or plays several files simultaneously it
adds to the over all channel lag. With #WA being one of the
highest data throughput channels on Undernet, we do all we can to
reduce lag.
The debate rages on, but we have generally come to the consensus
that it must include caffeine. Sugar is also a plus!
Typing in ALL CAPITALS is analogous to YELLING!
M&M's - you may be pinged with them, so keep your mouth alert
while in #WA :) RED ONES RULE!
Please note: Chocolate is the personal *perk* word for many of the
ops and users in #WA - use with caution. (you have been warned)
With #Wavaddictions' high data throughput (so much text flowing
through) we have found that more than 60 users adds enormous lag
to the channel.
IRC is setup up on a distributed network. Twenty to thirty
servers (fast computer systems) pass all the text sent to
#Wavaddiction around in a tree network. You send a msg to #WA via
Server Bob, and Bob hands it to Server Jim who hands it to Server
Sally - all of that computer connecting and transferring, adds
time (lag) to each transfer.
If more than 60 users are allowed, all that text slows Bob, Jim
and Sally down too much (they have short hands) and creates
channel lag specific to our channel. So, we limit it to 60 users.
PING is a small data packet that is send from one users computer,
through the IRC network and back. When PING someone, their computer
responds with PONG. By measuring the time it takes for the PING
to be PONG'ed, you call determine the amount of lag between you
and the other person. To get yourself PING'ed #wa type "ping me"
in the channel.
IRC servers are setup in a tree/spider web configuration.
Every-so-often, one sever gets bogged down and can't handle the
data being fed to it. The server will break its current
connection and rejoin with another server. When this happens,
all the users on that server will appear to leave channel. When
the server rejoins the network, all the users will appear to
rejoin the channel.
Yes, #wavaddiction is a fast moving channel - hard to keep up with
some times when the channel is full. Here are some hints:
ctcp 1:sound:/halt
ctcp 1:sound:/write c:\windows\mirc\wavget.log $nick $parm2 | /halt
A Swedish rock group famous in the 70's. A channel favorite!
Bringing Abba to channel is analogous to taking an apple to the
teacher in school :-)
![[-]](boxq2.gif)
We are a crazy bunch in wavaddiction and we do enjoy having fun.
We can be a little risque, however we try very hard not to be
vulgar or offensive. Occasionally the stripper wavs cause some of
us to become daring and delirious and a shirt might fly here or
there and it could be a male or female's shirt, one just never
knows. It's the music, of course, it frees our spirits and makes
us come alive and as the crowd roars its appreciation, and the
beat grows stronger and the pulse of the music moves us, and
before you know it.... well... let's just say it's a good thing
wavs are only music clips or we would have to modify "shirts" to
clothes. Hehe!!
Shoes are required, however, and that requirement must stand. The
users and ops of the channel are wonderful, marvelous people, a
joy to know, work and play with.. however, some just have THE
worst foot odor known to humanity. Trust me.. Trust my nose.. I
know of what I speak! Whew!! Tumpy wash those socks....
pahlease!! 4.16 by wildlips
The registered channel owner of #Wavaddiction is Wavbabe.
Wavbabe has done an outstanding job of building an maintaining the
largest wav channel on any IRC network - in todays IRC
environment, this is an incredible feat!
If you have a question about anything you don't think the ops can
answer, feel free to chat with Wavie, she is one of the most
approachable people you will find and listens to any and all
feedback.
Thank you so much for all the work and FUN Wavbabe - We love ya!

People are always asking the ops what makes #wavaddiction so
successful? The answer to that is found in the following list. In
the op listing you will find one of the most talented groups of IRC
channel operators anywhere on IRC. Not only is there a wealth of
computer knowledge, there are some of the friendliest and most
diverse group of people you will ever meet on IRC.
For starters; consider that in the following ops list, you will
find, a full time computer instructor, a defense industry engineer,
a computer quality control analyst, two computer retailers, several
commercial programmers, windows experts, macintosh power users, a
graphics design artist, a commercial web page creator, and even a
old commodore expert. The arrayed computer talent below is
sometimes intimidating, but having gotten to know these people I
can't think of a group of people more willing to help someone out.
The egarness to assist people is always present with them.
Even with the hundreds of years of combined computer experience
below, none of it would matter if this group weren't so approachable
and easy to get along with. Some of the most valuable ops we have
in wavaddiction know little about computers, but know a great deal
about people. From social welfare workers, school employees,
landscape contractors, housewives, aircraft mechanics, to an executive
chef - wavaddiction wouldn't be successful without people willing to
chat and open a friendly ear.
As you can see, wavaddiction has a very diverse set of channel
operators. Not only in knowledge and personality, but also in
location. The list includes people from Australia, Canada, England,
and the United States. Wavaddiction regulars also include people
from Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, Sweden, Singapore,
Hong Kong and many other parts of the world.
Op'ing in wavaddiction is not by-any-means and easy task at times.
We help people almost every time we enter the channel. Other
channels can't come close to the number of people we help with a
range of problems and questions. Often times you will come into
channel and wonder why there are a handful of ops and not a word out
of them - at those times, more-than-likely they are off setting
someone up with a wav program.
Thank you so much for supporting wavaddiction...welcome to our home
away from home. (bam)
