Humboldt County is named in honor of Baron Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, a famous German scientist, explorer and statesman. Originally created in January of 1851, the county was later legislated out of existence in July 1855 when it became a part of Kossuth and Webster Counties. Humboldt was re-established in February 1857 with only 12 townships.
