Unlike classical or "hoe down" style square
dancing, in which dancers follow a previously learned sequence
of moves, western style square dancers do not know the next
move until it is called. Proficiency in western style square
dancing, therefore, requires a few lessons and lots of
practice. A sense of humor also
helps!
Men typically wear jeans or western cut
dress pants with long- sleeved western shirts and neckerchiefs
or bolo ties. About half the women choose to wear the
traditional square dance dresses with voluminous petticoats.
Other women prefer to wear longer dirndl skirts or
line-dancing attire. These dress conventions are not
mandatory—you can actually wear whatever you feel comfortable
in!
