The dreaded CPI Form (continued)

Although it’s hard to see it that way, when you’re filling it out, the CPI form is a protection for the homeschool family. Several years ago, a father pulled his children out of school, and was later found to be abusing them. As part of his defense, he claimed to be homeschooling them. But since he had not filled out his CPI form, it demonstrated that he was not serious about homeschooling, and authorities did not associate his actions with our community.
Iowa Compliance Booklet Includes all my Iowa compliance, Iowa QnA, and CPI info. Keep it at hand as you filll out the form. 40 pages $5.25 ppd.
"Caesar" just wants the paperwork
I know that there are some conscientious homeschoolers who object to any sort of reporting to the school district. “Our children belong to God,” they say, and I agree with that. But the only way you can get into serious trouble homeschooling in Iowa, is by failing to fill out the CPI form. In other words, Caesar is much more likely to come after your children, armed with the police power of the state, if you refuse to fill out the papers. Caesar wants the paperwork, and since it is on his letterhead, Scripture indicates he’s entitled to it. Besides, I strongly remember one fellow who took this stand saying, over and over, “I’m willing to sign a paper telling the State that I’ll be responsible for my children’s education.” Me too. So fill out the CPI form.
Follow the Law
So I urge everyone to follow the law on this point. It’s mainly an inconvenience, and it in know way gives up your– or God’s– claims to your children. On the contrary, it demonstrates that you’re acting responsibly. And remember, NOTHING YOU CAN PUT ON THE CPI FORM WILL “SET A PRECEDENT” in any negative way. The law says what it says, and that cannot be changed by what you put on this form.
1-2 Personal information.
Homeschooling is done on an indvidual basis in Iowa. Just because one child in a family goes to school, that doesn’t meansll will follow suit. So you have to inform the school district about each child who will not be attending.
Your home phone number is your business, and supplying it to the schooldistrict will not be necessary UNLESS.. .
Your child chooses to dual enroll, especially for things like sports, or band. The law makes the school district responsible for notifying you when practices and events are scheduled, or sometimes are changed, and you make that prohibitively difficult if they don’t have your phone number. In summary, give them your phone number if it’s a convenient for you– don’t if it’s not.
