“God’s Weed-Killer” “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, Well, it appears that the rains have finally stopped and the hard work of beautifying the place so many of us call “home” (North English) can resume. A glance out my office window shows all kinds of people, each doing their very best to make sure that their soil is adequately drained, fertilized, mulched, and cultivated for the wide variety of plants and flowers taking root in our gardens, terraces and hillsides. It won’t be long before we’ll be enjoying the “fruits” of our labors! After watching this entire process take place, year after year, an interesting thought just recently struck me: all the nurturing steps being taken outside aren’t taking place because nothing was growing, but because the wrongthings were growing. And suddenly, God spoke to my heart and said, “Kirk, remember – you never have to plant weeds!” As anyone who has ever tried to exercise their green thumb knows all too well, weeds can and do spring up everywhere, even when you work hard to prevent them. While good plants (bearing good things to eat & enjoy) take planning, care and nurture, weeds (that cause nothing but problems) have an amazing ability just to “happen” – even in an area that may appear to be void of any growth. The same can easily be true in our lives as well. This is why it is so important that we don’t just fight to eliminate the “weeds” in our lives (like selfishness, anger, jealousy, deceit, impurity…you get the idea) but that we actively are planting seeds that will result in good fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). I heard a noted Bible teacher put it this ways, “It’s not enough to not do the don’ts; we must make sure to do the do’s.” One of the very best ways to accomplish both is to make sure we are spending time in God’s Holy Bible on a daily basis, for it contains many powerful “weed-killers” (weed preventers, as well) and the ability to nurture even the tiniest of seeds planted for His Name’s sake. While “weeds” will never result in any beneficial thing, good “seed,” faithfully planted and nurtured, will bring only good things. Get rid of the weeds, to be sure, but be just as sure to plant the good things. Why not spend some time planting by going to the ultimate storehouse of good seed (The Bible) right now? |
