Course Description: Macro Economics will cover Chapters 1-4 & 22-38 in the Economics text by Baumol & Blinder. As we progress through these chapters the class will develop an understanding of the basic concepts of which Macro Economics is based. Furthermore, the class will come to understand how these basic concepts apply to their everyday life.
Grading:
The grade you will receive for this course will be calculated on the following criteria:
Unit Work...................................355 pts.................35%
Cumulative Tests.........................355 pts.................35%
Journal / Participation..................160 pts.................15%
Comprehensive Final....................150 pts.................15%
  • This is an approximate breakdown of the criteria for grading and is subject to change as the instructor sees fit. However, students will be notified before any changes are made.
  • UNIT WORK will be composed of chapter assignments, pretests, and essay questions both written and oral. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UP OF UNIT WORK / ASSIGNMENTS.
  • CUMULATIVE TEST / COMPREHENSIVE FINAL will be composed of true/false, multiple choice, and/or essay application questions. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UP OF THE CUMULATIVE/COMPREHENSIVE TESTS.
  • JOURNAL / CLASS PARTICIPATION will involve class discussion of textbook topics and various readings that will be handed out from time to time. In addition, each student will need to set up a journal composed of articles and personal observations concerning how economics affects the student's everyday life. Accompanying each article the student will write a one paragraph summary, stating briefly what the article is about and how it affects the student's life. (An article/paragraph is worth five points and each student must contribute at least sixteen (16) during the semester. The student will also make weekly notations concerning class discussions, readings, etc. The completed journal will be due Dec. 2, 1996. Late journals will be accepted at greatly reduced points values.
OPTIONAL POINTS: A student may make-up up to 75 points which have been missed during the semester by completing optional work. The optional work will be composed of:
  • 2 detailed topic papers ................................................. @ 15 pts. = 30 pts.
  • economic editorial cartoons with 1 paragraph review @ 5 pts. = 10 pts.
  • 1 informative oral presentation.................................... @ 35 pts. = 35 pts.
Grading Scale: The following is the grading scale that will be employed in this course. If the student earns: 100% - 90% of the points = A range 89% - 80% of the points = B range 79% - 70% of the points = C range 69% - 60% of the points = D range below 60% of the points = F range * in each grade range a "+" / "-" letter grade may be given Class Policies: * All material handed in to the instructor must have written on the front the following items: - Student's full name - Macro Economics - Section #__ - Title of material Failure to have at least these items written on the front of the material handed in may result in no grade/points being received for the material. * All material handed in to the instructor must be presentable to be graded and points awarded: - neat handwriting or typing - no fringe - articles must be attached with staples or tape - journal materials must be in a binder as instructed * Instructions must be followed in completing any and all assignments. Failure to follow directions in completing an assignment may result in no grade/points being received for the assignment. * There will be NO MAKE UP OF UNIT WORK / ASSIGNMENTS . Any late unit work/assignments will have points deducted. After one week late no points will be given. * There will be NO MAKE UP OF THE CUMULATIVE TEST. * Late journals will be accepted at greatly reduced points values. * COMPREHENSIVE FINAL MUST BE TAKEN ON THE DAY SET FOR THE ENTIRE CLASS TO TAKE THE THE EXAM. Thus no early testing be will given. * Each student's grade is earned by the student and will be based on the quantity and quality of that student's work. I do not curve test scores, however I do calculate a class curve at the end of the semester. * Please contact me if you need or want additional assistance with this course.
