musings on

To say that photographer Gregory Colbert has a unique way of looking at the world is an understatement. The Web site of his lifelong project, Ashes and Snow, is a multimedia experience. If you have a broadband/high-speed Internet connection, you'll see the wings moving behind the boy on the opening page. Click on the "enhanced" experience and watch the elephants rise from the river and flap their ears. Even if you're on dial-up, the "basic" experience provides enough clues to keep you intrigued.

Once inside the Web site, click on "Vision" for the most complete sense of this project. Colbert's opening statement says: "In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards rediscovering the common ground that once existed when people lived in harmony with animals. The images depict a world that is without beginning or end, here or there, past or present." This page also provides links to the other elements of the exhibition, including the photographs, a novel, a film, and the installation itself, which is one of the more fascinating aspects of this project.

Choose "Exhibition" at the main page and you'll find a link for "The Nomadic Museum." That's a journey you want to take. It explores the "space" that accompanies the photographic installation around the world. Created by architect Shigeru Ban as a temporary and moveable structure consisting of 152 steel cargo containers, its open-weave design provides a unique atmosphere and lighting. Enjoy the trip!
