Princess Bride meets Midnight Run. That was director Matthew Vaughn's goal in bringing Neil Gaiman's graphic novel Stardust to the screen. And he's pretty much succeeded, with, maybe, a dash of Harry Potter, to boot. It's a fairy story for adults, says Gaiman, in the 'making of' featurette that's one of the Special Features on the DVD. Who couldn't use a good fairy tale these days?! One that's truly fantastic and good, romping fun, with no pretentions to be anything other than a great way to escape from the world for a couple of hours. Trust me, reality will be there when you get back. With magic as part of the everyday world, a blend of modern humor with swashbuckling pirates, wicked witches, and a fallling star come to life on Earth, our young hero gets to find his 'true love,' instead of moping around after the snooty girl who demands 'proof' and gifts in exchange for her hand. With lots of beautiful landscapes, kings and princes, a collection of ghosts who kibitz and comment on the action, sword fights choreographed to the like of the "Can-Can," and a skyboat crew that catches lightning for a living, there's lots to watch and enjoy. The film's Web site has some cool features, including 3D scannable panoramas, interesting graphics, and interactive games that could distract for hours, too. Then, for another enchanting grown-up fairy tale, take a look at August Rush. More great music there, too! |
