Pennies From Heaven

Resting serenely on the bottom of the burnished steel tub, the bright copper penny beamed up at me as I checked to see which washers were open for use. Pleasantly surprised at the find, I scooped it up and into my pocket before dumping laundry soap and dirty clothes into the tub and starting the machine. Busy with project work and intent on getting clothes clean and dry as quickly as possible, I put the penny next to the phone on my desk and got on with the day.

I don't remember how long it was before I stumbled across the next penny (or the next or the next) as I walked along the edge of the parking lot outside my apartment building on my way to a nearby sidewalk for my nightly two-mile loop around the neighborhood. But there it was in my path. This image of Lincoln was nearly as gray and weathered as the asphalt surface where it lay, but again, I scooped it up and into my pocket. "Thank you," I said out loud to no one in particular and to the Universe in general, and I went on my way.

But the pennies continued to appear. Each time, I added the new one to the group by the phone on the desk in my office. Somewhere around the sixth penny added to the stack, I finally thought this phenomenon was something I should pay attention to; finding money is just not something that happens to me. Working very hard for it is; having it seem to drop from the sky is not. What's going on? Hmmm....

As I write this, the pennies are still showing up. In fact, I found another one three days ago on the sidewalk a couple of blocks from here. I still find them in the laundry room. In the parking lot. In the doorways of buildings. Over the last year and a half, I've even found a nickel, a couple of dimes, and a quarter. A good friend tells me the pennies -- and the other coins -- are a sign of growing prosperity. That all sounds good and positive and encouraging. I choose to believe her. And why not? I can use all the MFTUs I can get!
