He served with the colonial forces in the ARW. His first wife, Mary Johnson died under mysterious circumstances and her family claimed that he had poisoned her. Robert was cleared of any wrong doing before he married his 2nd wife. His 2nd wife also died under suspicious circumstances. Many people felt that his 3rd wife killed him before he could kill her. Bethiah also died childless and under suspicious circumstances. Robert was already courting his next wife before Bethiah's death. Bethiah was a widow before marrying Robert Latham.

He was married to Jerusha Hooper in 1780 in Wheeling, West Virginia. Jerusha Hooper⁽²⁾⁽³⁾⁽⁴⁾⁽²⁰⁾⁽⁶⁾ was a herbalist/midwife.
