Other performing opportunities exist besides concert band. They include:
All students registered for band are members of the marching band. Marching band rehearsals begin at 7:00 a.m. every morning through State Marching Festival (mid-October). The drumline may have sectionals before or after school. The band will perform before and at halftime of home football games. Everyone is excused after halftime. Varsity football players are excused from performing at home games. Cheerleaders and Sophomore football players are excused from the pregame portion of our show. Everyone will perform at any contests or festivals the band attends.
Auditions for the flag squad will be held at the end of the school year. The size of the squad will be determined by the size of the band, interest and ability. All flag members must maintain their playing ability and get a B or above in band or will be removed from the squad. Audition criteria will be: ability, reliability and the instrumentation/sound of the band. Extra rehearsals will be required in addition to the regular band rehearsals. Audition material will be chosen by the leader and the director and will be taught by the leader. New members will be chosen by the director with the leader's input. Members may have to purchase parts of a uniform.
All students registered for band are members of the pep band. The Pep Band plays at varsity home basketball games and selected other events. The band will be split into two groups, each covering three or four games, dependent on the schedule. It is your responsibility to see that your part is covered; suitable substitutes are allowed. The schedule will be posted before Basketball season begins. You may opt to perform at games you are not assigned to; a "Pep Band" pin will awarded to those who attend 75% of all possible performances.
The Jazz Program is open to anyone who can play a jazz instrument. Auditions are held in the fall for chair placement and proper instrumentation. Two bands will be formed with enough interest. Rehearsal times will be determined by the members and director of the band. Other rehearsals and sectionals may be held . The jazz band travels as well as performing concerts at school. A "JAZZ" pin will be awarded to those who attend rehearsals regularly and all performances. Jazz II will set a schedule based on the needs of its members.
Honor Bands offer added motivation and challenge to the best players. Requirements for attending honor bands will be an All-State audition or contest solo. Only two (2) college honor bands may be attended per year.
Many summer camps are available for concert band, jazz band, flags, drum majors, etc. The Director periodically receives information from these camps.
