Spanish GoldOne story concerning Spanish explorers . . . oral tradition . . . goes as follows. . . .Three Spanish explorers, managed to survive the attack made on them by an enraged tribe of locals (probably with just cause!). Taking their silver (some say gold) with them, they managed to find a cave, get inside it and hide the treasure. Making a map so as not to forget where they buried it, they made for help. What eventually happened of them nobody knows, but the map showed up years later in the hands of another group of adventurers, they made the search and discovered the treasure. Taking a little of it they hid it again, in the cave. That night while they were sleeping, one of them went insane. He killed his companions and disappeared. Again the map turned up, this time in the 1940s, and a large excavation was started. They hired local men as guards and laborers, dynamite was used and thousands of dollars spent in the search, nothing of value was ever discovered. You can still enter the cave, but because of the excavating, doing it so is not safe. Table of contents Top of page |
