Born Est.1806 Georgia-- Died Sept.9 1871 Oklahoma
Watie was from an affluent, educated and slave holding Cherokee family, his brother had been a member of the "Treaty Party" that sold the Cherokee land in the east to the US government. There has been much speculation about why they did this. Since they knew there was a death penalty for selling tribal land without the tribes' consent, it seems likely they were acting in what they thought was the best interest of the tribe. At any rate the "Treaty Party" and their supporters moved to the Oklahoma Ozarks several years before the "Trail of Tears." In 1839, after they had removed the rest of the tribe to Oklahoma, a tribal council was held and death sentences passed on the members of the "Treaty Party." Stand's brother was among the first three to die. It seems they had passed sentence on him as well, but a friend found out what was happening and warned him. This began a 7-8 year intertribal war that finally ended in 1846 when Watie and Chief Ross made peace. By the time of the Civil War, He was a council member and sided with the South, reluctantly, Chief Ross did too. Some others joined the Northern cause. Stand became a General. He and his troops fought in many engagements. He was the last Confederate General to surrender. After the war he lost everything, even his children, and died impoverished, in Oklahoma.

Treaty by General Watie
Brigadier General Stand Watie, C.S.A,

Harold Bell Wright

Author of "Shepherd of the Hills." Published in 1907, this novel was about the Ozark folks living in Taney County Mo. (maybe you saw the movie, with a young John Wayne.) Wright was a minister who lived in Lebanon Mo. for a while, he loved the Ozarks and that is reflected in his book. In the Branson/Table Rock Lake area of Mo. the popular re enactment of the story is one of the area's oldest tourist attractions.
