Archeological evidence shows that the Ozarks have been a home for
humans for thousands of years. They have discovered artifacts from
many native tribes and cultures in the Mo. Ozarks. Our area is
famous for a unique (and sometimes disputed)
Bluff Dwelling "culture."
By 1555 the Spanish show up. Tales
about clashes with the natives, and Spanish silver mining in this
region, abound. Lead, however has had a much more enduring effect on the history of the Ozarks. By the mid 1800's Miners and mining companies began to move into the area, many small towns began to "boom" and they shipped the lead from the mines earth wide. Lead was widely used in the past, and with civil war looming on the horizon it became even more consequential. Both the North and the South wanted to control the considerable output of the local mines. The Civil war tore the area apart, but after the war, somehow, the land and the people recovered. Although to this day some refer to the "Civil War" as the "War of Northern Aggression." Today the Ozarks are noted for fishing, hunting, and tourism. Yet remnants of the past are still with us in the music and tales of the Ozarks. ![]() Human History of Ozark Springs Table of Contents Nature |
