Club Activities for the 2001/2002 Season

The Black Hawk Hiking Club’s yearly activity begins on the first week of each November. Thus our first 2000/2001 Year activity is being held on November 2, 2001. Note that all regular Saturday hikes begin promptly at 2:30pm. The schedule for all of the Club's events follow:

BIG HIKE STORY - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2001 - 7:30 P.M.
The Big Hike Story will be held at the Deere Wiman Carriage House in Moline, IL. This slide show will be presented by Joyce and Larry SpiIlers. It will show how the participants spent their week in the Minocqua, Wisconsin area, and the second week in Door County this June. Photo albums will be shared and light refreshments served.
The Deere-Wiman Carriage House is located at 817 11th Avenue, Moline, IL, near the Rock Island County Historical Society and Butterworth Center. Park in the lot across the street from the Carriage House.

HIKE No. 2049 - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2001
Camp Conestoga is the only Girl Scout camp left in this area. It consists of 340 acres of rolling terrain with woods, open field space, a lake from a dammed up creek and trails. The camp also provides the girls with canoeing and horseback riding. We hiked here 3 years ago. We are privileged to use their camp again.
Take I-80 from Davenport west to the Plainview exit (Walcott Truck Stop). Go north on this road which is Y-40 through the small town of Plainview which is at the intersection with Hwy. 130. Continue north on Y-40 toward Dixon about 4 miles. About a mile from Dixon, turn left on F-31 and the camp is 2 miles down this road. Follow hike signs for parking. You can also take 130 from Kimberly at the west end of North Park to Plainview and then turn north as noted above. Distance from Davenport is about 24 miles.

HIKE No. 2050 - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2001
Today we will explore the area between Campbell's Island and the village of Hampton.
From Iowa, take I-80 to IL 84 through Hampton to Empire Park located just south of town. Or.. .take IL 84 from the north border of East Moline and Silvis to .6 mile north of the entrance to Campbell's Island to Empire Park. The entrance is on the south side of a miniature golf course on the river side of the highway. Cross the railroad tracks and park in the paved lot. Watch for hike signs.

HIKE No. 2051 - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2001
We will follow the Duck Creek Bike Path (Duck Creek Park) east, heading to Middle Park Lagoon in Bettendorf.
Follow Locust St. west and turn right at the light at Marlo Ave., into Duck Creek Park. Heading east you would turn left into the part. Follow the road to the bottom of the hill. Look for hike signs.

HIKE No. 2052 - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2001
Starting from an observation platform overlooking Lake Odessa and the Mississippi River, we will hike down the bluff along the lake on grass trails.
Take Hwy. 61 bypass around Muscatine to the stop light at the south end of the four lane bypass. Do not turn right, but go straight on New Truck Road for approx. 1 mile until you come to Stewart Rd. Turn right and go approx. 13 miles passing the gravel pits. NOTE: Stewart Rd. turns into X61 after about 4 miles. Just stay on the paved road. A couple of miles after going up on the bluff you will see a sign on the left, "Mark Twain National Wildlife Refuge". Head for the overlook. No restrooms available.

NEW YEAR'S DAY STROLL
HIKE No. 2053 - TUESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2002 - 7:30 P.M.
This year the traditional stroll will take us through the historic section of Moline, IL, past lovely old mansions, historic sights, scenic overviews, and the Belgian area of Moline. Bring a snack to share and a mug.
Meet at the Deere-Wiman Carriage House, 817 11th Avenue, Moline, IL. Park in the lot across the street.

HIKE No. 2054 - SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 2002
We will meet at the shelter on the Marquette Street Bike Path and hike west toward Credit Island. Our strongest walkers may decide to hike around Credit Island. The hike is approximately 3 miles round trip. There should be lots of eagles so bring binoculars and your camera. A shorter version will also be offered for those who care only to walk until they see eagles. There will be no fire.
Marquette Street is west of the Centennial Bridge in Davenport. (John O'Donnell Stadium is Gaines at River Drive.) Marquette is the first stop light west of Gaines and River Drive. The bike path runs along the river. The shelter is south of River Drive about 2 blocks on Marquette.

HIKE No. 2055 - SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2002
Muscatine County Environmental Discover Center and Fuller City Park are across the street from one another. Fuller is all wooded with bridges crossing a stream. The Discover Center area has 85 acres with an arboretum and historical cemetery with an upper meadow trail connecting with the lower creek trail.
Take Rt. 61 to Muscatine staying on the bypass to where Cedar Street is your left turn. Look for hike signs 1/4 mile on the right hand side for the parking lot.

Join us at Devil's Glen Park, one of Bettendorf's popular city parks. It is very scenic in winter and easily accessible for all hikers.
In Bettendorf, go east on Middle Road 2 miles past the I-74 interchange to Devil's Glen Road. Turn right (south) and go 1 mile to Devil's Glen Park which will be on the left (east) side of the road. Watch for hike signs in the park.

HIKE No. 2057 - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2002
Today we hike in a location never before hiked by the club, the Ed Cabor farm. We will hike in the woods, through cornfields, and along a creek and lake.
From the I-80 bridge over the Mississippi, take Rt. 84 north through Port Byron. Turn right on Hillsdale Road (94th Ave. N). Turn left at the 1st left turn past the Byron Hills Golf Course. Approximate distance from I-80 bridge is 8 miles.

HIKE No. 2058 - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2002
We will return to Cedar Valley Park in Cedar County.
The park is located on the Cedar River just north of I-80. From Hwy. 61 interchange (exit no. 295), drive west on I-80 to exit no. 259, a distance of about 36 miles. Turn north onto Hwy. X-40 and drive 3.9 miles to Park Road. Follow the hike signs.

ANNUAL PICTURE PRESENTATION
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2002 - 7:30 P.M.
For our annual picture presentation each member may submit three slides in each of five categories: 1) Local Hike Scenes; 2) Local Hike Hikers; 3) Big Hike Scenes; 4) Big Hike Hikers; 5) Non-Hike Subjects. At this time members may also wish to display prints they have taken during the year in any of the above categories, though these will not be judged.
All pictures must have been taken within the last twelve months and must be labeled with your name, title of slide, category, and hike number. View your slide correctly, then turn it upside down and place a circle or dot in the upper right-hand corner to indicate proper mounting in the slide projector. Submit slides to: Ruth Lyon, 404 E. HIKE No. 2059 - SATURDAY, MARCH 2, 2002
Today's traditional potato soup hike will be held along the Hennepin Canal in Colona, IL. Our founders chipped frozen water from the river to make their soup on a sub-zero winter's day. We won't be using canal water, but we're sure it will be just as good.
From the Illinois Quad-Cities, take John Deere Road (Rt. 5) eastward. At Colona Road (there is a four way stop light) turn left. Proceed down the hill, across the Rock River bridge, into the town of Colona. Turn right on 5th Avenue. Parking, shelter, and restrooms are along the canal. Look for hike signs. Iowans can cross the I-80 bridge at LeClaire and exit at the first Colona exit. Turn right on Cleveland Road and proceed to the first stop sign. Turn left onto Rt. 84 through Colona to 5th Avenue. Turn right on 5th Avenue. The canal is on the left.

HIKE No. 2060 - SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 2002
Eagle Point Park in Clinton, Iowa, is one of its most popular parks. It sits on top of bluffs overlooking the Mississippi and offers beautiful views of the river. It also has a lookout tower, woods, a small foot bridge and nature center.
From the Iowa Quad-Cities, take Rt. 67 up the river to Clinton, Iowa. Proceed through the town, remaining on Rt. 67. Please pay careful attention to the Rt. 67 signs; it makes several turns while winding through Clinton. Look for a small cemetery and Park signs on the north side of town. The road to the Park will split off Rt. 67 and go to the right. Make an immediate right turn onto the road to the Park. Watch for hike signs.

Thomson Causeway is a level hike in the woods and around a small lake. You will enjoy the wide Mississippi and a picnic shelter with 2 fireplaces. Pit toilets are on the park grounds.
Thomson Causeway is about 46 miles north of the I-80 bridge at Rapids City, IL. Take Rt. 84 north to Thomson, IL. turn left at brown sign for Thomson Causeway (West Main Street). Turn left again on Lewis Avenue. Follow hike signs.

ANNUAL BANQUET - SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2002
Punch will be served at 6:00 p.m. and our delicious buffet dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. in the third floor loft of the Augustana College Student Center in Rock Island. Bob Motz, well-known area conservation advocate, will follow with a slide-show presentation of butterflies.

Join us today on a pleasant and informative hike at the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center.
Take I-80 west to the 284 Interchange, then go directly north on County.Rt.Y40 to Dixon, Iowa. Turn left onto County Rt.Y4E (heading northwest) for 1 mile. Turn north at 52nd Avenue. Follow signs for about 1 mile. Distance from QC center is about 30 miles.

Morrison-Rockwood State Park is lovely in every season with its rolling terrain, scenic lake, and wooded nature trail. Join us for a refreshing exploration of this beautiful park.
Take Interstate 88 east to IL Rt. 78 and go north to Morrison, IL. Continue through Morrison on Rt. 78 for 2 more miles to the park entrance sign. Turn right (east) and travel 1.5 miles to the park entrance. Follow hike signs to the shelter area. Approximate distance from the I-80/I-88 interchange is 35 miles.

HIKE No. 2064 - SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2002
The main hike will be a 3-mile jaunt through the rolling hills of Johnson County's premiere park, F. W. Kent, a 1,030-acre tract with oak-hickory-cherry woods and open fields. The trail passes by two ponds. The park also has a 27-acre lake surrounded by seven historic county road bridges which can be explored either on a 1.4 miles short hike or by those who would like to linger.
From the Quad-Cities, take I-80 west to the Tiffin exit (237, just past Iowa City). Turn right (north) onto the local road and go a short distance into Tiffin, Iowa. Where this turns sharply right (as Railroad Road), to about two short blocks to Grant Street, then turn left. Go up the hill to US 6 and turn left (west). Proceed from this intersection (Grant & US 6) for 3.7 miles to the park, which is on the right (before reaching the Oxford turnoff). Follow the hike signs from there. A map of the park is posted at an entrance station just inside the park.

HIKE No. 2065 - SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2002
Giant Goose Conservation Area was former strip mining land reclaimed by the Black Hawk Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for conservation and recreational use. It is a permanent refuge and feeding spot for giant Canada geese.
From the junction of I-280 and 1-80 (in Illinois), go 16.4 miles east on I-80 to Atkinson exit (exit 27) (just past Geneseo exit). Turn north toward Atkinson .6 miles to Hwy. 6 in Atkinson. Turn east on Hwy. 6 for 1 mile. Turn right (south) and immediately right again through the entrance gate of the Giant Goose Conservation Area. Proceed ahead 1 mile to shelter. Watch for hike signs. The distance from the Moline airport is approximately 30 miles.

The first Vespers Service was held in 1944 at the home of the club president, John Hauberg. Annually the service has been held at the Hauberg home. After the death of Mr. Hauberg on September 13, 1955, his home was given to the City of Rock Island and renamed the Hauberg Civic Center.
We will elect a President, Vice President, Corresponding Secretary, and three new Directors. Any new 50 year members will be announced. Gena Schantz will give a program on Colonel George Davenport. She is writing his biography and traveled to Lincolnshire, England, to research his roots.
Bring your own table service and a dish to share. Refrigeration is available. Coffee and iced tea will be furnished.

Hike by the William W. Cole Memorial Cabin and Geneseo Prairie Park, with a woodland bluff overlooking the Hennepin Canal.
Take I-80 east to Geneseo, exit 19. Turn left off interstate exit (onto north IL 82). Turn left at second street stop light (Main Street). Then take a right to stay on IL 82 and keep following it north through Geneseo. Distance from I-80 to hike sign on north IL 82 is 3.5 miles. Turn right on Roos Hill Road, then left at a scout cabin sign. Follow the hike signs.

At Mississippi Palisades State Park, enjoy a spectacular display of wild flowers such as; shooting stars, white & pink trillium, buttercups, and bluebells as we hike on the challenging trails of the park. The park's high bluffs offer breathtaking views of the Mississippi River.
Take Illinois Rt. 84 north to Savanna. Continue north about 2 miles to the park's south entrance. Watch for hike signs. Approximate distance from Moline is 60 miles.

Join us for the annual Hauberg Memorial hike at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve. A potluck supper will follow the hike. Bring your own table service, cup, and a dish to share. Electricity for crockpots is available. Beverages are provided. A brief memorial to our founder will be given.
From Hwy. 67 south in Illinois, take Hwy. 92 west through Andalusia. Turn right at the "Loud Thunder" Park entrance. Continue past Lake George and turn left at the next road. Follow hike signs to the Deer Haven Shelter.

HIKE No. 2069 - SATURDAY, MAY 25, 2002
Valkommen to Bishop Hill. We will hike around town and then out to the lightly traveled country roads. Come early to shop, eat, or explore the museums.
From the Quad-Cities, take 1-80 east to the Geneseo/Cambridge exit. Turn right and go south on Rt. 82. Continue through Cambridge. Take a left on County Rd. 4. and then a right on County Rd. 39. Look for signs directing you east to Bishop Hill. Park anywhere you like. Meet in the park in the center of town. No fire is allowed, but we will have beverages.

HIKE No. 2070 - SPRING OVERNIGHT, JUNE 1-2, 2002
We will be hiking and camping at Swiss Valley Nature Preserve and Park near Dubuque, Iowa.
To reach the park, take Hwy. 61 north to its intersection with Hwy.151. Go southwest on 151 about 2 miles to Military Road; turn right here (park sign)and go ¾ miles further to Swiss Valley Road. Turn left at park sign and continue to White Top road. Turn right here and go ½ mile to just past the bridge. Turn left into campground. We will be meeting near the enclosed shelter. The distance from I-80 and Hwy. 61 intersection is approximately 70 miles.
Reservations must be paid by May 20, 2002. Cost for 3 meals is $11.00 for adults and $8.00 for children under 12. We will camp at Eden Valley and canoe the Maquoketa River. Hiking will be at Eden Valley and Maquoketa Caves. Cost for the 6 meals is $18 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Tenting fees as of 2001, payable upon arrival, are $5.00/night/2 tents/no hookups. Those wishing sites with hookups pay $9.00. IMPORTANT: There are no reservations for any sites. Go early to be sure of a site. The campground has showers. Canoe rental is $25/day. Canoe reservations are due August 1. To reach Eden Valley, take Hwy. 61 north to Maquoketa, IA. Leave 61 at its intersection with Rt. 64 and go west on 64 10 miles to Baldwin. Turn left at the gas station and follow 50th Avenue for 2 miles to the park entrance. Follow hike signs.

HIKE No. 2073 - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2002
POTLUCK MEAL
Our hike at Scott County Park will be on the east side along some of the ski trails and the Memorial Hill. After hiking, stay to enjoy a potluck. Bring your own table service and a dish to share. There are some plug-ins for hot dishes. Drinks will be provided.
Take Hwy. 61 north from Davenport to the Park View exit. Turn right and go east .7 miles, to a four way stop. Turn left (north) on Scott Park Road (old Hwy. 61) for .2 miles. Turn right (east) .9 mile to the south park entrance. After entering the park, at the bottom of the hill, turn right and proceed to Indian Hills shelter which is across the road from the swimming pool. We will start the hike there.

HIKE No. 2074- SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2002
Hickory Hills Park is one of the "wild" places still preserved in the Iowa City area. The park has over 190 acres with many trails over a variety of terrain including hills, pastures, woods, and wildflower fields. The park has a shelter with restrooms. No electric outlets are available. We have not been to this park before, so it will be a new experience for all of us.
From the junction of I-80 and Hwy. 61 (Brady Street), drive west approximately 49 miles to Exit 246 (the Dodge Street exit). Drive south on Dodge Street approximately .3 mile and turn left at the cemetery. Follow hike signs to the parking lot.

Join us on today's hike at the historic Hennepin Canal near Geneseo, Illinois. It will be a pleasant, level walk through wooded areas along the canal. Take I-80 east toward Geneseo and get off at Exit 19. Go north into Geneseo on Rt. 82. At the first stop light, turn right on Hwy. 6. Take 6 east to S. Chicago Street and turn left to go north. Follow Chicago Street approximately 3 miles, crossing the small bridge. Make an immediate right into the parking lot at the canal.

HIKE No. 2076 - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2002
The history of the little river town of Albany dates back nearly 2,000 years to the Hopewell Indians who prepared the burial mounds high on the hill overlooking the Mississippi River. We will hike the paths through forest and native prairie flowers and the area surrounding the 200-acre Albany Mounds Park.
Illinois Rt. 84 runs out of the Illinois QCs, northward along the river to Albany. Iowans can intersect it by crossing over on I-80. In Albany, turn east on Park Ave. and follow it around the city park, where you take 5th Ave up the hill. At the white water tower, turn right onto Cherry St. which leads to the park entrance. Park in the paved lot or on the gravel road. Follow the hike signs

HIKE No. 2077 - FALL OVERNIGHT - OCTOBER 12-13, 2002
Quiet, peaceful, and remote, Morris Memorial Park offers a beautiful setting for camping. Tent camping is $7.00 per site. Electrical hookups are $9.00, all payable upon arrival. There are 15 sites, two tents per site. First-come, first-served. Flush toilets and modern showers have been added since our last visit. We will be hiking at nearby Lacey-Keosauqua State Park (roughly 80 miles west of Burlington, IA) where trails wind among the valleys and cliffs along the Des Moines River. To make reservations, send a check for $9.00 per person for 3 meals payable to Yuvonne Yowell, 2905 Willow Drive, Bettendorf, IA 52722 by October 1, 2002.
Directions will be provided upon receipt of reservations. Approximate distance from 1-80/1-280 interchange in Iowa is 113 miles.

ANNUAL CHICKEN SUPPER
HIKE No. 2078- SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2002
Join us on our annual hike at the DeSchepper farm and following feast at the Viola Presbyterian Church. The family-style chicken supper will be served at 5 p.m. sharp by the wonderful ladies of the church. Earl and Mary Ellen Strupp will present a program on the Canadian Rockies. Cost for this well attended event is $8.00 for adults and $5.50 for children under 12 years. Take Hwy 67 south from Rock Island to Viola, IL. In Viola turn right (west) onto Hwy 17. Go 0.5 mile and Viola Presbyterian Church is on your left.

HIKE No. 2079 - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2002
Lake Storey Park is a beautiful city park in Galesburg. We will hike on the expanded recreational trail along Lake Storey and enjoy the scenic views of Lake Storey and the majestic oak trees.
From Hwy. 6, by the eastern boundary of the Quad-City Airport, take Rt.150 south to Galesburg. Lake Storey is right off of Rt. 150 at the north edge of Galesburg. Follow the hike signs to the shelter in the park. Approximate distance from the Quad-City Airport is 35 miles.
