1976 Dodge Power-Wagon 300 mini-pumper The mini was purchased around 1984 from Simon's Fire Equipment in Farley, Iowa, and used previously as a tow truck. The apparatus has done well over the years showing very little rust and still moving up and down the roads quickly, though it is not as fast as the two big trucks we currently own and parts are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
This grass rig is on loan to the department through the Iowa Department of Natural Respources and the Federal Excess Property Program (FEPP). Basically, it gives rural fire departments the use of vehicles free of charge, the only stipulation is that it be returned to the IDNR when the department is finished with it. The fire deparment provides the fuel and insurance, and has possessed this truck since the early 1990's. It carries 200 gallons of water and an around the pump foam system, along with various hand tools for wildland firefighting - Iowa style. 1978 Dodge PowerWagon from FEPP (the Federal
2005 Welch Pumper on 2005 Sterling Acterra The pumper was put in service in in March 2005 and purchased from Welch Fire Company of Marion, Wisconsin. It carries 1,000 gallons of water and has 750 gpm pump. There are three 2.5" auxillary suctions and four 2.5" discharges, and the truck carries a portable tank to aid in water supply efforts. When designing the truck, it was decided that it would perform the basic skills, and carry the minimum tool requirements from NFPA so we could fit it into our very limited budget.
The tanker is quickly becoming the department's pride and joy. It carries 1800 gallons of water and boasts a 500 gpm pump with pump and roll capabilities. There are two preconnect located just above the tailboard and the department specified a dump to the rear and one to each side, along with the capability to carry two portable tanks inside the top compartment. The truck was paid for with an Assistance to Firefighter Grant and designed to meet the water supply needs of Green Mountain. 2002 International Danko tanker
1990 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton pickup This truck was purchased from a used vehicle dealership in Southern Iowa, it sports a 3/4 ton chassis, four-wheel drive, and was the only vehicle with air conditioning until we got the two new big trucks. It carries a tank of about 200 gallons of water, and has an around-the-pump foam system, along with miscellaneous hand tools used for wildland firefighting - Iowa style.
The squad is a new addition to the emergency services in the Green Mountain area. It was purchased for $1,000 from the Mahaska County Hospital in July 2006, and finally placed in service in February 2007 after negotiations with the Board of Trustees. As part of the negotiations, the fire department took on the responsibility for and oversight of the Green Mountain First Responders, and created an EMS division under the Chief. The unit is a non-transport service, but the squad allows for easier transport of all of our equipment, and provides a place for firefighters to cool down or warm up during the extreme temperatures we experience here in Iowa. While the squad has been controversial, it has proven its worth with its involvement in the Cropduster incident in July 2007. EMS squad
Green Mountain Fire Station This building was purchased from Larry Somers in 1973. It was used previously as an automotive repair shop. Believe it or not, all five of the fire trucks do fit inside. It is crowded and one truck has to be moved to get the grass rigs out, but it is functional. The squad has to be sheltered at a different location.
