Father, On your answer about confession you said nothing about our yearly obligation of going to confession. I have a friend that says we can count a communal confession as our yearly obligation. I say we have to go to confession to a priest once a year. What is your answer to this?

I believe what you are referring to is the Easter Duty..... which in the old Code of Canon Law, mandated that every Catholic was obligated to confess their sins and receive Holy Communion at least once a year during the period between Easter and Trinity Sunday. With the New Code of Canon Law (1983), we are still bound to receive Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter Season.

A person only has to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation if they are in the state of Mortal Sin. I highly recommend, as does the Church, that regular celebration of the Sacrament is a lot better than just when we are in Mortal Sin.... It not only does the body good... but more importantly, does the Soul great wonders.

Confession is only valid when celebrated with a priest (mediator for God and community).
