Friendships Come And Go

I have never forgotten the day a person I regarded as my best friend told me she would no longer be a friend because I was single with no children. Married and rearing four children, she had decided that we no longer had enough in common to be friends. She did not think our shared past, our present activities and future opportunities to be together were valuable enough to merit investing time in our relationship.

Many of us have had relationships ended, perhaps not as rudely as my onetime friend cut me off. Most often people just drift apart and lose track of each other. Our daily "rat races" can leave little room for developing or sustaining relationships, sometimes even the relationships in our own household.

That is one reason prayer is so important in our daily lives. We must daily nourish the most funda mental of all relationships in our lives-our relation ship with God. Prayer helps us stay aware of God's love for us, helps us know deep in our hearts that God never casts off any of his friends. God never loses our address and telephone number no matter how far away we move from him.
