Learning To Trust God

So do not be afraid.

I am afraid of many things. Dogs frighten me, as do heights. In spiritual matters, too, I hesitate. Although I have done some daring things in my life-pronouncing vows for instance-I always do so with apprehen sion. So how do I see Jesus' words, "Do not be afraid," applied to me? Given my human condition, consistent bravery seems to be impossible.

How easily I forget that Jesus' words are the ideal for which I am striving! I can improve in trust in God and in responsiveness to grace. When I look back on the past month or year, I do find some instances where I have responded to Jesus with courage. For them, I am grateful.

Matthew records that every hair of my head is counted, an image conveying how deeply God is concerned about every aspect of my well-being. Indeed, God is trustworthy-even to the point of dying for me.

Jesus, may I put my hand in your strong pierced hand with confidence that you understand fearfulness and still call me forward to walk with you.
