Press Release: NEWS FROM THE CAPITOL

From: State Representative Keith A. Kreiman

Solutions to the Methamphetamine Problem

Finding possible solutions to the methamphetamine problem in Iowa is a hot issue at the Capitol this year. Just last week, I spoke with Governor Vilsack and his staff about possible solutions; attended a subcommittee meeting on a proposal to give some sellers of methamphetamine a life sentence in prison; attended a panel discussion on the problem and possible solutions; arranged for a meeting between legislators of both parties and attorneys who prosecute drug cases; and requested that a bill be drafted to require all persons convicted of methamphetamine use spend time in jail and get treatment.

I have no doubt that the legislature and the Governor will agree on a package of proposals which will be state government’s solution to the methamphetamine problem. This solution will include even tougher prison sentences, and more use of treatment and education to stop and prevent the spread of methamphetamine use. However, I also have no doubt that the state government’s solutions will not be enough to save hundreds or thousands of children and families from the devastating effects of this nasty drug.

As with most problems faced by our State, the most effective solutions to the methamphetamine problem will be found in our local communities. Local community people and groups of people will have to provide local solutions and local effort. Parents, schools and employers will have to know how to deal with this problem, both to prevent use of the drug and to react correctly when they suspect use of the drug. Pharmacies and store employees will have to know how to spot people who may be buying supplies to make the drug.

Many groups in the city of Ottumwa are looking to build a regional residential treatment center and half-way house for methamphetamine users. I look forward to working with these groups as I try to do my part in finding solutions.

We all have a part in finding solutions to this problem. Please talk to others about the problem; discuss possible solutions; and lets work together. If we can save one child from being born with birth defects from the drug use of his or her mother, or if we can save one family from crimes committed by a criminal high on the drug, or if we can stop just one child from trying the drug, our efforts will be a success.

Finally, due to your suggestions and ideas, I have already filed a number of bills this year. Many more are still in the drafting stage. To find out more about these bills, and to learn more about what is happening in state government, you may want to visit my new website at: www.netins.net/web/etkrsa. It contains a number of links which I hope will help you to know more about your government.
