Handling a Trauma Call With No Patient Policy

In the event that an ambulance responds to the scene of a trauma call and there is no patient at the scene when the ambulance arrives, the following protocol will be followed:

I.          Confer with Law Enforcement and Fire/Rescue personnel at the scene to determine if they have any information regarding the whereabouts of the potentially injured parties.

2.         Examine the scene to determine the mechanism of the trauma and to look for evidence of injuries having occurred.

3.         If the situation warrants, enlist the assistance of the Law Enforcement and Fire/Rescue personnel at the scene and conduct a thorough search of the area-

4.         After exhausting all reasonable efforts to locate any injured parties, advise Law Enforcement personnel that the ambulance will be returning to Ambulance Base and that the ambulance will be available to return to the scene if needed at a later time.

5.         Document, on an Ambulance Run Report, the nature of the call, a description of the scene, and all efforts taken to locate any injured parties.
