"FLYBALL ACTION ©"
ASK ME ABOUT IT
BY JUDY HAGAN

This article is long overdue and I apologize to all of you that have been wondering what had happened to the flyball articles. All of the articles that I write are stored in my computer and in June when we left for vacation I had an article almost complete. I figured that when we returned that I would put on the finishing touches and forward in. At that time backup was a word that I didn’t know much about. Needless to say while we were gone on vacation several bad lightning storms came through our area and both of our computers got hit. No article left and it took a month to get my computer back. Now we are back up and running (hopefully) and still trying to get out the small little glitches. Now I know what backup means and will be using it.

On to better things. In July I had an opportunity to go to Houston, Texas for the World of Dogs Show at the Astrodome. The Houston Flyball Association, Alan Weiner captain, hosts a tournament in conjunction with the show. They ran a tournament on Friday with 18 team participating and a Saturday/Sunday tournament with 36 teams participating. We were able to meet a lot of nice people from a different area including Missy Daily and Pam Martin from Top Dog Racers from Dallas, Texas. They must really love flyball because the weekend after we talked to them at the tournament in Houston they headed for a tournament in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. To any of you near Texas I would strongly recommend that you attend the Houston tournament next year. The shopping is great (all sorts of doggy things and human things to buy) and the Houston team has one of the best dressed announcers that I have seen at a tournament. A special thanks goes out to Sam Ford of the Houston Flyball Association for providing a running commentary to the people attending about flyball and what was happening. He did a great job (even if I did come from Ohio according to him).

The following was provided by Alan Weiner of the Houston Flyball Association.

Ten Ways Flyball Helps With Obedience Training

  1. · Improves recall - encourages fast, enthusiastic recall
  2. · Dogs learn to work with tremendous distractions - focus, attention and control greatly improves
  3. · Great for conditioning - improves stamina
  4. · Improves canine social skills/ability to work around other dogs
  5. · Improves retrieving skills
  6. · Improves jumping skills - jumping is more efficient, mechanically correct and the level of motivation and enthusiasm is raised. A lot of proofing is also done to prevent going around jumps
  7. · Improves broad jumps - each heat in Flyball includes eight, 10 foot broad jumps
  8. · Sits and down stays - flyball dogs are commonly put on stays while the team changes jump heights amidst great distractions
  9. · Improves dog’s motivation for training and working - have your dog ask a flyball dog, they enjoy working!
  10. · Fast, straight utility go-outs can be taught using flyball patterning

A hearty congratulations goes out to Instant Replay Gold team of Caledonia, Ontario for setting a new world record of 16.526 seconds at their own Kitchener tournament July 26th & 27th. This year has proven to be an exciting year with Instant Replay and Total Recall along with the Jets from England all holding the record.

Congratulations to the following dogs for achieving their Onyx awards, the second highest award in flyball:

Upcoming tournaments are listed from, tournaments, I felt it redundant to list them here again; Up too 3 months worth are listed in The "FF article".
