Clinton farmed and operated a saw mill in Van Buren Co. for many years prior to turning to public life. He served as County Assessor for 20 years, he was a member of the Board of Supervisors, and Vice President of the V.B. Telephone Company. While a sawmill operator he furnished ties for the Burlington Railroad when its branch was constructed from Birmingham to Ottumwa.
