Originally there were approximately 200,000 barns built in Iowa.  Now it is estimated that only 60,000 barns remain, with another 1,000 or more barns disappearing from Iowa's landscape each year.  EASTERN IOWA'S HISTORIC BARNS AND OTHER FARM STRUCTURES preserves in print Eastern Iowa's historic barns built from 1839 to 1955 with over 175 photographs.  Eight Iowa counties and 20 rural cities are covered.

Former president Herbert Hoover was living as a youth about five miles from one of the featured unique octagonal barns when it was built in 1883.  This barn's aesthetic beauty placed in its natural rural setting is so awe-inspiring that people from other countries come to visit this barn each year to see the unusual bell shaped roof, a suspended staircase, a railway car, and laminated ribs on the interior.  It's sheer size makes it one of the largest round barns in the United States.  It may be the only barn built with a bell shaped roof and is thought to be the oldest surviving barn built of it's kind in the United States.

This book also contains photographs included from the author's own research, the first ever barn tour of the Amana Colonies, the Johnson County Historical Society barn tour, and the Iowa Barn Foundation's annual barn tour.  To Order click here:  http://stores.lulu.com/dschense

Based in part on real life events, a frugal Mid-
western family of four ventures out on a 1998 Mexican
driving vacation.  When the aggravating Granny ends up
dying across the border, the son-in-law thought it was the
end of his problems.  However, when the family van gets
stolen along with everything in it, including Granny's
body, the problems are just beginning.  The border patrol
won't let them cross the border until the family can
account for the missing body and van.  To make matters
worse, the mortician was paid cash and went on an
extended international vacation, creating the comedic
mainstream novel,  Extended Vacation.  Will
Granny's body show up before the money runs out?
