Lincoln Events in Southern Indiana
The following is information received on February 27, 2009 from the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial:
Ravinia Program
On Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 2:00 pm CDT, a special program will take place in the Abraham Lincoln Hall at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. “Mystic Chords of Memory,” presented by the Ravinia Festival of Illinois, is a program of spoken word and music honoring the 16th President that was prepared especially for the Lincoln Bicentennial. The music portion will include works by Brahms and Mendelssohn, contemporaries of Lincoln, which will be performed by the Lincoln Trio. Formed in 2003, the Lincoln Trio brings together experience spanning the globe; each member is an artist of international renown. Violinist Desirée Ruhstrat has performed throughout the US and Europe, appearing at the White House and performing on live radio broadcast heard around the world with the Berlin Radio Orchestra; cellist David Cunliffe has performed with the BBC and Royal Scottish orchestras as well as touring ad as a member of the Balanescu Quartet; pianist Marta Aznavoorian has appeared with the Chicago Symphony and has performed at the Kennedy Center and the Sydney Opera House.The program is part of Lincoln Boyhood’s continuing observance of the Lincoln Bicentennial and is free and open to the public.
Special Speaker Series
On Sunday, April 19, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial will host the first of several special speakers who have been invited to the park this year as part of the observation of the Lincoln Bicentennial. Mr. Seth Bongartz, of Hildene, the Home of Robert Todd Lincoln, will begin the series by discussing Robert Todd Lincoln and his efforts to preserve his famous father’s legacy. The public is invited to attend the program which will be held in the Abraham Lincoln Hall at the park’s Memorial Visitor Center.Future speakers in the series will include Erin Mast, the Curator of President Lincoln’s Cottage in Washington D.C., on May 17; Jennifer Shook, Artistic Director of the Caffeine Theater in Chicago, who will present a program entitled, “Abraham Lincoln in Contemporary Theater and Popular Culture,” on May 31; Jessica Michna, who impersonates Mary Todd Lincoln, on June 14; Mr. Ron White, Lincoln scholar and author of the most recent Lincoln biography, on July 3; and staff from the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, who will discuss the famous poet’s biography of Lincoln, on August 2. All programs will be at 2:00 pm CDT and are open to the public.
The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial is located off of Indiana Highway 162 in Lincoln City, Indiana. Admission to the park, which includes the Lincoln Living Historical Farm, is $3.00 per person, age 17 and older, with a maximum charge of $5.00 per family. The receipt for admission is good for a period of seven days from the date of purchase. There is no charge for visitors who present an Interagency Pass, a Senior Pass, an Access Pass, or an Annual Lincoln Boyhood Park Pass. The passports may be purchased at the park.
