Allen Guelzo Nominated (10/10/05) According to information from Gettysburg College, "President George W. Bush has announced the nomination of Dr. Allen C. Guelzo, the Director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College, to the National Council on the Humanities. The Council serves as an advisory board to the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and is composed of 26 scholars, artists, writers, and composers who serve staggered six-year terms. Along with Dr. Guelzo, the President has also nominated Dr. Jean Bethke Elshtain of the University of Chicago and Dr. Eugene W. Hickok, former Under Secretary for Education in the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Guelzo's nomination goes now to the U.S. Senate for confirmation."

Lincoln Mailbag Contributor Completes Book (7/7/03) Teacher Mike Burkhimer has compiled a massive book on Lincoln literature titled 100 Essential Lincoln Books, due out in November 2003.

Ed says, "I have edited (and arranged) a reprint of the Benn Pitman trial book of 1865. It reproduces the Pitman transcript of the Lincoln conspirators trial (421 pages) and includes, for the first time, the commentaries of eight 'experts' on the conspirators and assassination. The commentaries are by Thomas Turner (trial), Terry Alford (Booth & Herold), Burris Carnahan (G.O. 100), Joan Chaconas (John Surratt), Laurie Verge (Mary Surratt), Pep Martin (Arnold & O'Laughlen), Betty Ownsby (Powell & Spangler), and myself (Editor, Introduction, General Conspiracy, Mudd, Atzerodt). The book, entitled "The Trial," will be released for a special book signing at the Surratt House and Museum in Clinton, Maryland on Saturday, June 28 (noon to 5 PM). All eight commentators plus the artist (Kieran McAuliffe) who designed the jacket will be there to sign copies.
