Servius Tullius Stone

Below the Lincoln statue you can see a small, irregular stone from a Roman tomb which has a Latin inscription. The translation reads, "To Abraham Lincoln, President for the second time of the American Republic, citizens of Rome present this stone from the wall of Servius Tullius by which the memory of each of those brave advocates of liberty may be associated."

The stone supposedly linked the lives of Lincoln and Servius Tullius, an ancient king who supposedly gave the plebeians of Rome the rights of citizenship. U.S. Representative Shelby Cullom sent the stone to Springfield while the tomb was under construction.
