This folk dance and music ensemble includes nine virtuosos, each of whom has trained and performed with well-known Russian song and dance companies.  Their program covers Russian, Cossack, Gypsy, Ukrainian, and Klezmer songs and dances, played on many traditional Russian instruments such as balalaika, garmoshka, and more.  You’ll be fascinated with the vibrant, colorful costumes, and interesting and humorous explanations for each number.

Small Town Stories with Neal Hagberg
Friday, October 17, 2008

Neal Hagberg grew up in a small town, and in them, sees values that are often missing in other places.  A master in storytelling and song, Neal shares a program that celebrates the memories and treasures of the small town experience, from growing up, to leaving, coming back, and more.  His sensitive weaving of tales and music will cover the breadth of emotions that are a part of that experience.   Long-time CLACA members may remember Neal from the duo Neal & Leandra, who were part of our concert series in 2002.

Julliard graduate Janice Martin will dazzle you with her consummate artistry on violin, piano, voice, and dance.  This program, which also features a jazz trio including piano, drums, and bass, sees the music of George and Ira Gershwin brilliantly re-imagined.  Covering classics such as "It Ain't Necessarily So", “I Got Rhythm,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” and many more, this show breaks all the rules in a kaleidoscopic mix of musical styles and characters.
