"...the Lord was my support.
He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me."
Psalm 18:18-19 (NIV)
During the intensity of a trial, when the pain and suffering are at their worst, I often say, "God, can't you just fix this? Can't you just make this all go away? I'm tired of suffering. I'm tired of being in pain. Please make it all better."
God is good. He knows that to take away the pain and suffering immediately is not always what is best for us. How are we going to learn endurance if we have nothing to endure? How are we to have our faith tested if we have no need to trust? How will our character grow if we have nothing to fight?
God is good. He gives us what we need most in our trials and that is His loving support. In due time, when our faith is proven, our character strengthened, our love for Him and others deepened, then He will bring us out into a spacious place.
Why? Because He delights in us. Now doesn't that take your breath away?

Pass It On
My grandmother died a couple of years ago. She was my favorite grandma because she was the one who came clear across the continent to visit me and my family.
As she grew older and became less able to get around and do things for herself, her son took it upon himself to help her write down her memoirs.
For this, I am extremely grateful. These memoirs, and her Grandma Moses-style paintings, describe a life far different from my own. They describe apple butter making, being a cook for an old sawmill, life as a Christian mother and wife in the midst of tragedies and difficulties.
To the end, this beautiful woman loved God and loved her family. She made a difference in the little ways she knew how. And then she passed it on.
I believe that I am a Christian today because of her choices and her prayers (and my own mother's choices and prayers). I believe her best memoir is in the legacy left in her children and grandchildren. And I believe that's why God says, pass it on.
