Williamsburg girls beat Solon

By DOUG DORNATH

Everyone that played scored in Williamsburg’s big 68-33 victory over the Solon Lady Spartans in a home contest Friday, Jan. 11 in Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference girls basketball action. With the win Friday, the No. 12 Raiders are 11-1.

“We had another great first quarter and put the game away early,” said WHS head coach Aaron Feddersen. “Our scoring was very balanced, and it was good to see Sarah (Claypool) have a nice offensive game. Defensively as a team, we were very good and allowed only three offensive rebounds. We didn’t allow many open shots and anytime you force teams to shoot with a hand in the face all the time, they are not going to hit a high percentage.”

Claypool had a team-high 14 points along with teammate Samantha Meyer. MacKenzie Westcott finished one rebound short of a triple-double with 13 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds against Solon. She added three blocked shots defensively.

As a team, the Raiders had 21 assists in the contest. Anne Stecker, Claypool, Hannah Wilson and Lexi Belland all added two assists in the win for Williamsburg.

Morgan Eckenrod and Jackie Armstrong both had six points, Stecker had five and Belland finished with four. Wilson, Katie Spenler and Lynna Malloy all scored two points for the Raiders.

The Raiders hauled in 32 rebounds for the game. Malloy and Stecker both had six rebounds and Armstrong grabbed five.

“By controlling the boards, we were able to get out and run and we got a lot of high percentage shots in transition,” said Feddersen. “We wanted to speed up the temp to make their back line of the zone play defense instead of just their top three girls and it worked well. We had assists on our first 15 baskets and MacKenzie had a dozen of her own. Again, the bench played very well and its fun getting all the girls some quality time and seeing everyone produce.”

Williamsburg 80, CCA 35

Williamsburg forced 33 Clear Creek Amana turnovers and cruised to an 80-35 triumph over the Clippers at home Tuesday, Jan. 8 in Williamsburg.

“Our intensity level as a team was very high the whole game,” said WHS head coach Aaron Feddersen. “We changed up our routine in pre-game preparation about four games ago, and we’ve seen a huge difference in the starts we have had. The girls deserve all the credit for the way they have turned around their performance in the first three quarters, and it starts with our captains and seniors.”

MacKenzie Westcott finished with 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting and teammate Samantha Meyer had 21 points, 13 rebounds and four steals to help lead the Raiders to the win.

Anne Stecker and Lexi Belland both had seven points and Sarah Claypool and Lynna Malloy both added six in the win.

Jackie Armstrong finished with four and Hannah Wilson and Katie Spenler rounded out the scoring for Williamsburg with two points each.

As a team, the Raiders out-rebounded the Clippers 41-15, which allowed them to take 70 shots as a team.
