HLV picked up two more conference wins last week and are now 3-0 in the new year. The Warriors faced off with Iowa Valley Tuesday, Jan. 8 and defeated the Tigers by a final of 56-39.
The Warriors had an 8-6 lead after the first period of play and went into the locker room at halftime up 25-22. HLV came out of the half charged up and dominated the third quarter. The Warriors extended their lead by 10 in the period and outscored the Tigers, 17-13, in the fourth quarter.
“This was a back-and-forth game in the first half,” stated HLV head coach Zach Tremmel. “We came out in the second half and put together our best half of the season. Our defense tonight was outstanding. We really concentrated on stopping their top player (Tyler Olson). We held the leading scorer in the state to 14 tonight, which is less than half his average.”
The Warriors shot the ball well against the Tigers. They shot 60 percent from within the 3-point line and went 8-for-16 from the free-throw line.
Jared Herzberg led the Warriors in three categories with 13 points, eight assists and five steals. He also had three rebounds. Dylan Miller finished with 13 points, four rebounds, a steal and an assist. Scott Blomme grabbed a team-high six rebounds and blocked an impressive five shots. He also had 10 points and a steal.
Jacob Burns finished the game with nine points, three assists, three steals and three rebounds. Bryce Hasley ended the night with six points, two steals, two assists and a rebound. Jon Faga ended the night with four points, a steal and an assist. Drew Schultz added a point.
The Warriors rallied in the second half of their game against Belle Plaine Friday, Jan. 11 to take another conference win. Belle Plaine had a 25-18 lead at the half, but HLV outscored the Plainsmen 36-26 in the second half to win, 54-51.
“We were really fortunate to sneak out of there tonight with a victory,” commented Coach Tremmel. “We were down 10 points at one point in the second half, and fought back to win this game. Our kids know how to win and that’s huge to have in a team.”
HLV shot 52 percent in the game and also made four 3-pointers. The Warriors attempted 34 shots from the free-throw line in the game, but only made 13.
Herzberg led the team in three categories again with 20 points, seven assists and eight rebounds. He also had two steals and went 7-for-11 from the charity stripe. Blomme finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Burns finished with four rebounds, four assists, two points and a team-high five steals.
Miller blocked two shots to lead the team and also recorded seven points, six rebounds and two assists. Faga finished with seven points and an assist, and Hasley had five points, two assists, three rebounds and a steal. Schultz had three points and a rebound.
