BC boys have overtime battles last week
Benton Community held on for a 1-point overtime victory last Tuesday night over WaMaC rival Waterloo Columbus, 65-64, in boys’ basketball action at Van Horne.
A strong Columbus rally in the second half pushed the game into overtime, where Benton outscored Columbus, 7-6, for the win.
Levi Montague led Benton with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Tony Stenberg added 15 points and four steals. Andrew Berger had nine assists. Zach Twedt had 11 point, and was 3 of 4 for three-pointers.
The team was a hot 61.29 percent from the field at 19 of 31, and 5 of 18 for three-pointers for 27.78 percent. The Bobcats were 12 of 20 from the line for 60 percent.
The team had 27 rebounds and 18 turnovers.
Coach Larry Carlson said, “This was a great team win for our kids. They have had some tough luck lately, but they stuck to the plan and made something happen. As coaches, we appreciate their effort and how they have handled themselves. Our intensity and effort was great from start to finish in this game. We hope we can use this as a good start to a nice run for us on future games.”
The game went into overtime again Friday night, as Maquoketa topped the Bobcats at home, 66-60, with the 12-6 overtime period making the difference.
BC was 17 of 36 from the field for 47.22 percent, and 6 of 2 for three-pointers. BC was 8 of 15 from the line for 53.33 percent. Benton had 33 rebounds and 11 turnovers.
Levi Montague had 17 points and 16 rebounds. He also blocked three shots. Andrew Berger had six assists. Alex Weekly had three steals.
Coach Larry Carlson said about the Maquoketa game, “We hustled and made some plays, but we lost our composure late in the game. We need to learn from this and work on our end of the game situations. We have not executed well in practice on late game situations and it caught up with us in this game. We had our chances during the game, but we did not get it done. We will get better from this game.”
Benton bounced back Saturday night at Van Horne for a non-conference win over Fairfield, 74-66.
Benton was 12 of 25 from the field for 48 percent. Benton was hot outside the arc as they drained 10 of 16 three-pointers for 62.50 percent. Drew Trumbull was 3 of 4 and Zach Twedt was 4 of 6 for three-pointers. The Bobcats were 22 of 34 from the line for 64.71 percent.
The team had 29 rebounds and 15 turnovers.
Levi Montague had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Drew Trumbull added 14 and Weekly had 11 points. Weekly also had 11 assists and two steals.
Coach Carlson said about the Fairfield game, “Our shooting was great during this game. We had many kids who contributed to the scoring effort, not only those who scored, but those who made the passes to people to get them open looks. Our defense still needs to improve and I want to see us cut down on the offensive rebounds other teams are getting, but the coaches are pleased with our effort and bouncing back after a tough loss the night before. Our kids have been working hard, it is nice to see them reward themselves with a good game.”
