Improvement goals

Following a semi-lengthy discussion, the board approved the Montezuma Community School District Improvement Goals. They are:

• Increase the number of students proficient in reading comprehension, math and science each year.

• Provide professional development to all staff that utilizes best practice and focuses on continuous improvement.

• Provide the resources, including teaching staff, facilities, infrastructure and access to technology, necessary to support high student achievement in a safe and healthy environment.

• Increase meaningful engagement with parents and the community in the education process.

New bus barn

Versteeg reported that he met with Don Vos, Doug Hoksbergen, Steve Audas, John Bushong of Bushong Construction, and Bill Lawrence of Shive-Hatery on Tuesday, June 16, to review plans and possible locations for a new bus barn. He reported that the bus barn could be built two different ways. One way would be to build a wash bay and maintenance bay, with the buses being stored outside. The second method would be to construct a bus barn with wash bay, maintenance bay,  and four additional storage bays, thus storing the buses inside.

Facility plan

Versteeg reported the following three items regarding the facility plan, and possible future building projects

• Reviewing local sales and service tax to determine if the district’s revenue purpose statement needs to be changed by a vote of the people to allow the district to borrow against the tax in the future

• Bus barn committee – currently reviewing options and possible locations for the bus barn • Noted that school personnel is going to review the district master facility plan this fall

Other business

In other business, the board:

• Discussed several ISAB (Iowa School Association Board) Legislative Action priorities for 2010. More will follow in a later meeting.

• Approved a special education delivery plan

• Received a report that auditors would be at the school on July 15

• Received a report that school board member nominations papers are now available and can be turned in between July 6-30.

• Discussed use of stimulus money the district received. It was noted that the money was less than stimulating, since it is being used to replace reductions in school funding.

The next regular school board meeting will be Wednesday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library.
