HLV Board OKs change orders, shores up school construction

The HLV School Board approved several change orders for the construction of the school’s new addition at the June 10 school board meeting. HLV Superintendent Bill Lynch said following the May 13 HLV School Board meeting, he and HLV School Board President Laurel Hollopeter agreed the design for the sidewalk needs to be changed at the entry south of the new gym. The design change is needed to keep water from running inside the door. The amount for the change is $24,935, Lynch said.

During the June 10 meeting, the HLV School Board agreed to move forward with that change order as well as a second change order for designing the cabling work (for computers and other electronic equipment) in the new addition. Lynch said the cost was not in the initial estimate because normally larger schools have staff on hand to do the design.

However, he said HLV is a smaller school and needs to pay DLR Group to do the design for cabling. Lynch said he is still working with DLR on the final cost of the project.

The HLV School Board also approved a change order in the amount of $1,745 for installation of shrubs outside of the gym area.

The board also approved a change order in the amount of $7,245 for Garling Construction to handle demolition of the houses at 501 and 503 4th St., Victor. Lynch said the school planned to demolish the houses themselves, but it would cost about the same to have Garling handle the entire responsibility of the project.

HLV School Board also approved a change order in the amount of $7,241 for a new floor in the old science room.

Lynch said when workers tore up the old floor, they discovered it wasn’t “even” underneath.

Employee raises

The HLV School Board approved a salary increase for non-certified personnel for the 2009-10 school year during the June 10 meeting. The total package increase matches the same increase teachers will receive, which is about 3.5 percent.

Employee resignations and hires

• The school board approved a letter of resignation from Adam Hadenfeldt as a teacher and a coach effective at the end of the baseball season.

• The board approved the resignation of Lisa Hinrichs as assistant girls softball coach effective at the end of the current season.

• The board approved the hire of Joshua Smith as a secondary teacher assigned to teach social studies for the 2009-10 school year. In addition, Smith will be an assistant varsity football coach, the junior high boys track coach and the head baseball coach.

• Jennifer Cronbaugh was hired as the district’s high school girls track coach and resigned as the junior high boys track coach.

Sharing agreement

The HLV School District will share German, Spanish and vocational agricultural instructors with the Belle Plaine Community School District in the 2009-10 school year. In addition, the schools will share Advanced Placement (AP) programming in 2009-10. The HLV School District will offer an AP biology class for students in both districts and the Belle Plaine district will offer two AP classes in socials studies for students from both districts.
