Lents named executive director of Poweshiek County Extension

Catherine Lents has been named Executive Director of Poweshiek County Extension Service. Lents has previously served as Extension Director for Poweshiek County. Her new position took effect Sept. 1.

According to Lee McFee, Poweshiek County Extension Council Chair, the decision to create a county executive director position was made by the council when Iowa State University restructured its extension program this past summer. “Iowa State University Extension has a strong presence in Poweshiek County with the programming we are facilitating through our office,” said McFee.

“The council felt it very important to maintain the level of programming the public has come to expect by creating this position.” Lents' responsibilities will remain much the same in her new position; providing leadership for programming, networking within the county, carrying out the Iowa State University Extension mission of building partnerships and providing research-based learning opportunities to improve quality of life in Iowa.

“It’s exciting to be in this county,” commented Lents on the county council’s decision. “The community and the people are positive and great to work with, the staff has been very supportive. We have a great team here and I am looking forward to moving ahead with the programs and activities being developed and continuing to serve the people of Poweshiek County. I appreciate the council’s confidence in me.”

Lents grew up on a farm in the Adair County town of Fontanelle. She was active in 4-H, and attended Iowa State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1978. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Drake University, graduating in 1995. According to McFee, the restructuring is creating some new programming potential and the council looks forward to working with Regional Extension Education Director, Brian Dunn and with Iowa State University in this partnership. Some programs on the calendar for this fall include Master Gardeners training, Poweshiek Leadership Program, implementing First Lego League Clubs throughout the county and the First Annual “Big Green Shoot,” a fundraiser for the Poweshiek County 4-H and Youth Program.

The Poweshiek County Extension Office is located at 114 S. Third St. in Montezuma. For more information about local extension programs, call 641-623-5188 or visit www.extension.iastate.edu/poweshiek.
