Ladora city election candidates

In Ladora, four candidates are running to fill two spots on the city council. Incumbent Michelle Hawkins filed candidacy papers to run for Ladora City Council along with newcomers Branden Martinson, Vicky Schutterle and Sandra Stratton.

Current Ladora City Council member Cody Hawkins did not file papers to run for re-election.

Ladora Mayor Stan Brenneman is also running for re-election.

In order for voters to get to know them better, the candidates answered the following questions for the Marengo Pioneer-Republican:

Vicky S. Schutterle, 56, Ladora

• Occupation: Industrial engineering tech

• Family: Single

• Why are you running for city council?

To encourage the Ladora community’s input into changes and improvements in the city. Promote an open book policy, providing citizens with information on how their tax dollars are spent. To vote for policies and decisions for Ladora with citizen input taken into account.

• What are the duties of the Ladora City Council?

Attend all meetings. To communicate with the citizens of Ladora. To vote for changes and policies that take into regard the citizens of Ladora concerns.

• If elected, what goals would you accomplish in the next four years?

To entice Ladora citizens to partake in the decision making process of the city council. I would like to see improvements to Highway 6 through Ladora to encourage traffic to stop and spend time at Ladora businesses and encourage future homebuyers to consider Ladora to raise their families.

• How would you accomplish these goals?

Vote for policies and changes that include visible improvements to the city. Encourage the citizens of Ladora to voice their opinions on what changes would benefit the community as a whole.

• What is your vision for the City of Ladora?

Citizens more aware of where their tax dollars are spent in Ladora. More input from the community as a whole. Have Highway 6 through Ladora more welcoming for visitors to stop, purchase goods and consider purchasing or building a home in Ladora. Encourage council and citizens to improve Ladora.

• What past experiences would qualify you to be a successful city council member?

Mayor pro-tem, city council member and Ladora citizen since 1991.

Sandra Stratton, 70, Ladora

• Occupation: Stock person at Big ‘G’ Food Store

• Family: Four grown children and several grandchildren

• Why are you running for city council?

The town of Ladora needs a different voice.

• What are the duties of the Ladora City Council?

To listen to what the townspeople want and needs of Ladora. Getting this council to work as a whole, not as individuals.

• If elected, what goals would you accomplish in the next four years?

To make sure the townspeople of Ladora know and understand what really goes on at the council meetings. Making sure city equipment is used for city use only.

• How would you accomplish these goals?

Talking and listening to the people of Ladora. Making sure the minutes of the meetings are known to the people.

• What is your vision for the City of Ladora?

To get this whole town working together.

• What past experiences would qualify you to be a successful city council member?

I’ve been on the council before.

Branden Martinson, 37, Ladora

• Occupation: Work at Harden Bros. Propane, Inc.

• Family: Wife, Amy, and daughter, Payten, 4.

• Why are you running for city council?

The city started working on the water project in town and I would like to see that project to the end.

• If elected, what goals would you accomplish in the next four years?

Finish the water project and try to get things cleaned up around town.

• How would you accomplish these goals?

Work with the other council members and the citizens of Ladora.

• What is your vision for the City of Ladora?

I would like to work on these projects and see them get done so the city is a better place to live and a better place for kids growing up.

• What past experiences would qualify you to be a successful city council member?

I filled in on the Ladora City Council when there was an open position.
