Victor city election candidates

All five seats on the Victor City Council as well as the mayor position are up for election in Victor.

Current council members Dan Cavin, Lynn DeNeve, Marla Faga and Joan Robinson along with newcomer James Weiermann are running unopposed for the open seats on council.

Current Victor City Council member Nick Simmons did not file papers to run for re-election.

Mayor Roger Pawlak is also running for re-election unopposed.

In order for voters to get to know them better, the candidates answered the following questions for the Marengo Pioneer-Republican:

Lynn DeNeve, 33, Victor

• Occupation: Owner of DeNeve Enterprises

• Family: Wife, Jen; two kids, Ivy, 7, and Lexi, 5.

• Why are you running for city council?

I enjoyed the time for the past eight years, to keep Victor a clean and safe town.

• What are the duties of the Victor City Council?

To run the government like a business, looking to expand where it can, keep tax rates and fees as low as possible, to keep its elected officials and employees available to the public.

• If elected, what goals would you accomplish in the next two years?

To keep property taxes low, reduce our spending, to find ways to save money we spend on police.

• How would you accomplish these goals?

To work on the budget in the spring and find places where unnecessary money is being spent.

• What is your vision for the City of Victor?

Would like to find more ground for housing and commercial development.

• What past experiences would qualify you to be a successful city council member?

Been on council for last eight years. Always very involved in politics and current events. Business owner of 17 years. Farmer.

Marla Faga, 53, Victor

• Occupation: Self employed

• Family: Married — five children, two sons-in-law, three grandchildren.

• Why are you running for city council?

I want to assist the city residents make Victor the best town it can be to live in, raise families and come home to.

• What are the duties of the Victor City Council?

Listen to the concerns of the community. Evaluate needs of the present and future.

• If elected, what goals would you accomplish in the next two years?

I would try to accomplish the continuation of the beautification project that has begun, to bring more business and families to Victor.

• How would you accomplish these goals?

Work with various organizations to promote the beautification project and use resources to show how Victor will benefit businesses and families.

• What is your vision for the City of Victor?

To see the city remain a place for family, friends and businesses to thrive, a place to give our children a high quality education, a place to call home, a place that grows with the future.

• What past experiences would qualify you to be a successful city council member?

I have been on the city council for several years and have learned how city government works, and have tried to listen to the needs of the community and implemented items to address those needs.

Joan Robinson, 49, Victor

• Occupation: Registered nurse

• Family: Husband, Dennis, and two children, Blake and Lauren

• Why are you running for city council?

We have done some good things and I would like to see Victor continue to remain a place that people are proud to call home.

• What are the duties of the Victor City Council?

To maintain local government while still balancing the budget.

• If elected, what goals would you accomplish in the next two years?

I would like to see us remain fiscally strong. Explore some type of elderly housing in cooperation with the Victor Development Committee. Continue improving the parks and to see the new street light project accomplished.

• How would you accomplish these goals?

We need to be cautious in our spending as the state continues to deal with money issues. We need to look for grants and other means in making improvements.

• What is your vision for the City of Victor?

To be a place where everyone that lives here is proud to call home.

• What past experiences would qualify you to be a successful city council

member?

I have lived in this area most of my life and want my town to remain, and

not become a vacant spot in the highway. I have served the last two years as a council member and I think we have done some good things. I also have served on my church board.

James Weiermann, 41, Victor

• Occupation: Parts manager, Manatt’s Inc.

• Family: Wife, Janisa and children Tiffany, Madison, Makenna, Derick, Dylan and Devin.

• Why are you running for city council?

I love the community we live in. It is an excellent environment to raise my children. I would like to get actively involved in the process of the city’s government.

• What are the duties of the Victor City Council?

I believe the city has an obligation to unbiasedly connect with both the small business and the individual resident respectively. Each relies on the other for continued success and an improvement on the quality of life in our community.

• If elected, what goals would you accomplish in the next two years?

To keep Victor a growing community, as well as a pleasant place to work and live.

• How would you accomplish these goals?

By objectively working with the other council members, officials and the community to meet common goals.

• What is your vision for the City of Victor?

I see Victor as a place that welcomes change for the better, yet still knows the importance of our past. I would like to see it stay a place that relies on its faith and continues to hold education as a strong value.

• What past experiences would qualify you to be a successful city council member?

I have many years experience of working closely with others. I care about the city that my children are growing up in. I have experience at solving problems in a professional, political manner.
