Tragedy on I-80
A Victor man was shot and killed at the Victor rest area on Interstate 80 Saturday, May 29. Peter Riggs, 31, Columbus, Neb., was later arrested in Johnson County and is charged with first degree murder.
According to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Department report, at approximately 7:46 p.m. the sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting an injured subject at the I-80 Westbound Rest Area at the 208 mile marker near Victor.
Jeffrey D McAdam, 46, Victor, was found in the men’s bathroom by a truck driver with a gunshot wound. The truck driver called 911. Rescue personnel responded. McAdam was pronounced dead at the scene.
McAdam was an employee working at the rest area at the time of the incident.
Riggs was later arrested in Johnson County. Riggs was transported back to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office where he is charged with first degree murder. Riggs was seen by a magistrate Saturday, May 29, and a $1 million bond was set.
An autopsy will be scheduled.
According to McAdam’s Web site, www.jeffstaxidermy.net, he grew up in Iowa and Colorado and graduated high school in Colorado Spring, Colo. He operated Jeff’s Taxidermy since 1998. He was married to Kristen McAdam.
McAdam was a Lifetime member of the National Taxidermists Association as well as a member of the Iowa Taxidermists Association. He competed at the Iowa show yearly since 1998 and won numerous awards.
Agencies participating in this investigation include the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa State Patrol and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
